KES 2015 Showcases Electronics, IT Trend ¡®Convergence¡¯
The exhibition lures 450 exhibitors from 23 countries

Korea Electronics Show 2015 (KES 2015), which attracted 450 exhibitors from 23 countries, wrapped up a four-day run from Oct. 14 to 17 at KINTEX in Goyang, north of Seoul.

True to the theme ¡°Where the Creative Things Are!¡± KES 2015 showcased electronics parts and materials; ICT; IT convergence; broadcasting; consumer; software and mobile apps; 3D; and automobiles/medical devices.

In particular, KES 2015, the 46th rendition, attracted newcomers and returning mid-size companies. KEC, which has been with the semiconductor field for 47 years, returned to KES to show off Compact PF Diode the company developed on its own and other related items. A Newcomer in the life environment solution provider field, Winix released 3D dehumidifiers, outfitted with SK Telecom¡¯s smart service for the first time in Korea, which has led to the company¡¯s winning of the Order of Industrial Service, Bronze Tower. Bujeon Electronics also displayed neckband-type streo for Bluetooth head sets.

The exhibition space was divided into four themes, including VIP, KES Innovational Awards, ICT, to help spectators have more convenient access to the exhibition. Invited buyers and spectators chose any course they wanted. An American buyer said the placement of exhibitors was made according to each theme, allowing spectators¡¯ convenience to get a better look at the trend of the exhibits. 

KES 2015 also coincided with such 30 diverse events as a conference tailored to give a glimpse into electronics and ICT trends, a kind off-line sales event akin to ¡°Black Friday,¡± and export consultation meetings for invited buyers. The international conference on IoT standardization and technology trends was presided over by Chairman Bruce Kraemer of the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA).

KES 2015 showcased a variety of convergence items. Samsung Electronics unveiled the newest smart watch, Gear S2, for the first time in the industry, in which things you need most from your smartphone are available with a simple twist. 

The fair also demonstrated such items as IoT-based smart home solutions, LTE, Android smart watches, TROMM twin wash allowing both simultaneous and separate washes, a Drone fighter capable of conducting air combat, excavators and virtual reality railway simulators.

New technologies, developed by universities, also led the convergence trend. Among the eye-catchers was the world's first tabletop floating 3D display based on light-field technology Kwangwoon University developed in collaboration with LG Electronics. 

The bulk of the winners of the 4th KES Awards were convergence products. In particular, new items in the smart home segment made their debut. Samsung Electronics released the upgraded version Powerbot ¡°VR9200,¡± a robot cleaner adopted with a digital inverter motor and Wi-Fi that can be controlled via smartphone. POWERVOICE demonstrated a technology controlling light devices via Wi-Fi, while BrainTech release an eco-friendly food waste treatment device, which was the subject of much attention from Chinese buyers. 

Some 200 dignitaries, including Vice Minister Lee Kwan-sup of the MOTIE and other government and industry representatives, participated in a ceremony to kick off the exhibition on Oct. 14. During the ceremony, 40 people were presented with government orders and other prices in recognition of their contribution to the development of the Korean electronics and IT industries. Samsung President Kim Jong-ho was honored with the Order of Industrial Service, Gold Tower, while Winix CEO Yoon Hee-jong received the Order of Industrial Service, Bronze Tower. 

Exhibition No. 5, where export consultation meetings for buyers were held, was flooded with buyers and officials from exhibitors. The organizer invited buyers from 21 countries via agents to help Korean companies make inroads into foreign countries. Among the 100 buyers were officials from Sprint, the fourth-biggest telecom service provider in the U.S., JIAYOU, China, a top-three home shopping company, and Russia display importer Alfa Media Group. 

KES 2015 is a combination of exhibitions previously organized by the Association (KEA), the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association, and the Korea Display Industry Association. The exhibition was jointly hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), Gyeonggi-do Provincial Government and organized by the Korea Electronics Association (KEA).
