Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) said Shin-Wolsong Nuclear Power Unit 2, Korea¡¯s last upgraded Korean-standard nuclear power plant (OPR1000), launched commercial operations on July 24.
Sin-Wolsong No. 2 , Korea¡¯s 24th nuclear power unit, had its safety confirmed after a rigorous eight-month review, including a phase-by-phase power ascension test and reactor and turbine generator performance test. The unit obtained the go-ahead notification from the regulatory body. Commercial operation means the starting of full-scale power generation following the successful testing phase and approval from the government.
Korea now has 24 nuclear power plants in operation — six at Kori Nuclear Power Complex, six at Hanbit Nuclear Power Complex, six at Wolsong Nuclear Power Complex, six at Hanul Nuclear Power Complex — with a total power generation capacity of 21,716MW.
Al told, 24 nuclear power units in operation account for about 22.5 percent of the nation¡¯s power generation capacity of 96,681MW. With an annual power generation capacity of 7.9 billion kWh (equivalent to about 13 percent of the total annual power consumed by Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do), Shin-Wolsong Nuclear Power Unit 2 is expected to make a big contribution to ensuring a stable power supply for Korea.
With investment volume reaching 5.31 trillion won, the construction projects for Shin-Wolsong Nuclear Power Units 1 and 2 benefit the local economy, creating economic ripple effects amounting to more than 700 billion won by generating around 6 million man years of jobs and launching local economy support programs.

Yeongdeok Office Opens for Trust Building Prior to Nuclear Power Plant Project
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. opened an office in Yeongdeok Gyeongsangbuk-do, on June 24, where the Cheonji Nuclear Power Plant will be built.
KHNP Yeongdeok Office located at Woogok-ri, Yeongdeok-eup includes a promotional hall that will be used to help residents gain a better understanding of the nuclear power plants, a lecture hall where seminars can be held and a lounge. There is also a designated work space for KHNP staff so that they can work on site for the construction of a nuclear power plant.
KHNP President Cho Seok said, ¡°When it comes to the construction of a new nuclear power plant, the first priority is building a cooperative relationship to boost symbiosis with the region. This belief led us to open an office prior to establishing a basic plan for construction so that we can have efficient communication with the local residents. I hope that all the people living in this region feel free to come and use the facilities.¡±
He added that various other support projects would be explored and implemented in order to facilitate cooperation with Yeongdeok-gun. He also encouraged Yeongdeok-gun and its residents to take particular interest in the construction of a new plant.
Since September 2012, when the region was announced as the site for development of power sources following Yeongdeok-gun¡¯s application for nuclear power plant construction, KHNP has maintained close communication with the region prior to the confirmation of the 7th Basic Plan for Power Supply.
