Hyundai Elevator President Han Sang-ho was awarded with the Order of Industrial Merit, Gold Tower in recognition of his spearheading a companywide productivity innovation drive at the 39th National Productivity Awards ceremony at COEX in Seoul on Sept. 9.

The Order of Industrial Merit, Silver Tower went to Ewha Diamond Industrial Co. for carrying out productivity promotion activities and promoting exemplary management, particularly labor relationship with no labor disputes. 

The two are among 31 organizations and 11 individuals who ran away with government orders and other prizes in recognition of promoting productivity and enhancing national competitiveness. Hyundai Elevator President Han is credited with enhancing competitiveness of the Korean elevator industry by promoting production and cooperation between large- and small-sized companies, and his integral roles in conducting creative R&D activities and expanding exports. Thanks to aggressive R&D activities, Hyundai Elevator has successfully developed the world¡¯s fastest elevator with a speed of 1080mpm, a double-deck elevator with a speed of 600mpm and eco-friendly elevators. 

Some 800 people, including award winners and representatives of industry and business organizations, participated in the rally, hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and organized by the Korea Productivity Center (KPC). Among those on hand at the event were Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, MOTIE Vice Minister Lee Kwan-sup, KPC CEO Hong Soon-jick.  

The National Productivity Awards ceremony takes place every year to honor companies, organizations and individuals for their contributions to promoting national productivity and the development of the national economy. 

True to the theme of the rally ¡°Productivity Unfolding Creative Economy,¡± the scope of the award winners was widened to include more SMEs, service companies and female CEOs to spread the outcomes of productivity activities to all industrial sectors, KPC CEO Hong said.

Prime Minister Hwang, in his commemorative speech, called for improved productivity and sustained corporate innovation to achieve a target of rising to a country with $30,000 in the per capita income. ¡°The government also will redouble efforts to improve economic fundamentals by focusing on top four reform measures, including labor reform,¡± Hwang said. He went on to say that the realization of the creative economy, which is  designed to ensure the resurge of the Korean economy, is directly related to the improving of productivity, and the industrial community is asked to demonstrate creativity, passion and unswerving spirit to achieve the ¡°Miracle of the Creative Economy surpassing the Miracle of the Hangang.

MOTIE Vice Minister Lee said representatives from SME, potential mid-size companies and large-sized firms adopted a declaration to improve productivity, pledging to conduct activities to promote productivity in a creative fashion. He called for them to do their utmost to strengthen national competitiveness, create values endlessly, and innovate productivity. 

The government plans to hold session on excellent practices national productivity award winners in such areas as Seoul, Daejeon, Daegu, Gwangju and Busan during the period between Oct. 6 and Nov. 5 to instill a determination toward productivity innovation and spread the exemplary productivity practices.

The latest National Productivity Rally is characterized with a rise in the portion of prizing winning SMEs. The winning rate of SMEs rose from 54 percent last year to 69 percent.
