The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and the Korea Gas Safety Corp. (KGS) jointly sponsored the 22nd Korea Gas Safety Grand Award event on June 26 at the Grand Ballroom in the 63 Building in Yeouido, Seoul, to help spread awareness for the safe use of gas and strengthen the resolve to practice safe use in homes and public facilities across the country.

The ceremony had some 500 people, including Dir.-Gen. Chung Yang-ho of the MOTIE, President Park Gi-dong of the KGS and representatives of related organizations, candidates for awards and gas retailers from all over the country.

Leading the list of the award winners was President Koo Ja-yong of the E1 Co., who won the Industrial Merit Gold Tower Medal; President Kim Sang-beom of the Hwasung Gas Co., who won the Industrial Merit Iron Tower Award; the Korea Boiler Installation Association, which won the Presidential Citation; and individuals and organizations, which were presented with Presidential Citations.

Dir.-Gen. Chung said in his congratulatory speech that safety cannot be substituted with anything, and the government will do its utmost to prevent, and at the same time reduce, gas related accidents around the country based on its ¡°safety first¡± gas management policy and long-term basic plan. It¡¯s all part of an integrated master plan for gas safety set up by the government.

¡°We would like to see Korea become a top nation in gas safety in the world by 2017,¡± said President Park of KGS. ¡°In order to bring that about, all the related organizations, including the government, the gas industry and the people, should be together and cooperate with each other to make the use of gas safe to build a happy Korea.¡±

In the meantime, MOTIE and KGS designated ¡°gas safety week¡± from June 22 to June 26, holding 37 events across the nation including an international seminar, a gas safety integration forum, a gas safety campaign during an outdoor activity season and others.

KGS was set up in 1974 and has been engaged in protecting the lives and properties of the people through education initiatives by the Gas Safety Education Institute and the Gas Safety Research Institute, as well as 27 local branches and regional offices throughout the country.

Major business areas include inspections and check ups of gas products from petrochemical plants and the facilities that use them, as well as issuing certificates. It also analyzes gas related accidents, carries out research on gas development, conducts education on gas safety and leads public relations on gas safety.

As the only professional organization on gas safety in Korea, the company chose customer satisfaction as its core keywords in its management policies. The company also chose professional, liability, unique, and service as four major values.

KGS is Korea¡¯s only world-class organization specialized in gas safety technology.

The business scope of KGS covers all areas of the gas industry, including the testing and certification of gas appliances, as well as products and facilities, safety diagnosis and assessment using cutting edge equipment and techniques, IECEx certification, investigation and analysis of gas accidents, gas safety PR, education and training and gas safety R&D.

Furthermore, as a public organization, KGS has taken up social responsibilities for the eco-systemic development of the society by promoting the Low-Income Household Assistance Program and the Love-Farm Village Campaign.

¡°Based on the firm belief in ¡®servicing¡¯ safety for the customers, all executives and employees do our best so that KGS can become an organization earning national confidence and take off toward a global enterprise equipped with the world's foremost competitiveness,¡± the company said.
