The National Pension Service (NPS) officially opened its new office in the innovative city of Jeonju-Wanju in North Jeolla Province, in a ceremony on July 22. A group of dignitaries participated, including Reps. Kim Choon-jin, Kim Seong-joo, Kim Jung-rok, Kim Yoon-deok, Gov. Song Ha-jin of North Jeolla Province and Mayor Kim Soong-soo of Cheonju, plus about 300 other people.

Since its debut in 1987, the NPS has been working for the improvement of welfare and the stable livelihoods of the people. The pension service completed its relocation to Jeonju-Wanju in June, soon after the new building was completed in March.

The NPS became the 10th public entity to relocate to Wanju, one Korea¡¯s ¡°innovative cities,¡± joining such government-run companies as the Rural Development Administration and the Public Publication Promotion Agency of Korea.

The Jeonju-Wanju Innovative City occupies the Manseong-dong and Joong-dong, plus part of the Iseo County. The area consists of 9,909 square km. In all 12 public companies are expected to move there by 2016. When the relocation of those companies is completed next year, a city with 30,000 people will be born with a respectable residential environment with education, cultural and other facilities also included.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to have such social facilities as schools, houses, transportation and medical institutions to move into the city in time with the relocation of those public entities next year to prevent any inconvenience to the newly relocated companies¡¯ operation, especially, to the employees of working for those companies.

The Ministry will also plan to see that the innovative city is self satisfactory in every respect with the ministry providing support to the city to set up clusters of industry, academics and research areas.

For this purpose, the ministry held a meeting in June of officials from Jeonju City, Wanju County and North Jeolla Education Office, the relocated companies, Korea Land and Housing Corp. and the Jeonju-Wanju Innovative City to discuss problems with the relocation of those public companies and the new innovative city in accommodating them.

The NPS Institute held a commemorative seminar about the topic of relocation on the second floor of the new building in Jeonju-Wanju City. The name of the presentation was,  ¡°NPS 30 Years and Its Results and Tasks Ahead.¡±

The event was held to check the operation of the NPS since its launching in 1986, and talk about the tasks ahead. The first event held by the NPS since its relation had a number of local experts participating, with NPS Institute members and other talking about the operation of the NPS and debates by experts participating in the seminar.

Chairman Choi Kwang said the seminar is significant as in that it was held after the relocation to mark its ¡°Jeonju age¡± and discuss its future opera. The NPS should prepare for changes facing Korean society, including an aging population, poverty facing the elderly, and a unified Korea, among others.

Lee Yong-ha, the head of the Pension System Office of NPS, spoke on the introduction of the pension system and the operation of the fund and its reform, followed by Park Tae-young, who spoke on the subject of the growth of the NPS and the changes in the management of the fund and future tasks ahead.
