NHIS Issues Declaration to Protect Human Rights and Expand Healthcare
Statement released on June 30, on occasion of its 38th anniversary and the 7th anniversary of life insurance for senior citizens

National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) declared on June 30 its human rights management to protect human rights and stress the importance of ensuring health for the people. The pledges were made on the occasion of its 38th anniversary.

NHIS declared the protection of human rights as a major policy. The company noted that human rights have become a social issue in the international arena, including at the U.N., which led measures to strengthen the responsibility of business firms to protect human rights in the course of their operations.

The human rights declaration was adopted in a meeting of the Human Rights Management Committee on June 5 in which civil organizations, human rights experts outside the company, executives of the cooperative firms, union representatives, attorneys for NHIS and representatives of NHIS employees attended.

On May 29, NHIS participated in the Business Firms and the Human Rights International Conference, which was hosted by the Korea branch of the UN Global Compact and the National Human Rights Committee. They presented a basic plan for human rights for 117 public organizations, along with samples of health insurance for all citizens in Korea with no segregation and those left out.

Chairman Sung Sang-cheol said the NHIS joined the UN¡¯s sustainable balanced development agenda¡¯s human rights management and declared that the NHIS will continue to maintain Korea¡¯s system to protect human rights, whose excellence has won international recognition.  The NHIS will continue on its course as a model organization in the international society.

The NHIS will continue to make efforts to prevent human rights violations from happening and do its best to check the supply network. It will complete the human rights management system and the human rights management policies in managing the human rights management, while working for human rights through education and prevention of iolations before they happen.

The declaration said the NHIS will lead moves to guarantee improving national health and social assurances so that the people can live like human beings should in terms of quality of life, while doing its best to achieve the mission given to NHIS by the state and the people and to protect human rights.

¡°In order to accomplish the mission, we will respect the human dignity and value and uphold human rights management as the foremost duty,¡± the company said. 

The declaration also says that the NHIS will respect the human rights of those who are members of the NHIS, suppliers and related organizations, including cooperative firms and regional societies and others who share the interest with the NHIS.

The declaration goes on to note that the NHIS will rule out any discrimination based on race, academic record, age, region and religion.

The NHIS will do its best to provide the needed services so that the people¡¯s rights to have good health will not be impeded. The NHIS will also do its best to manage health insurance without discrimination and segregation strengthening the equal nature of both national health insurance and the long-term insurance for old-aged people.

The NHIS will also recognize the rights for its employees to form groups and collective negotiations. The declaration also says the NHIS will provide pleasant working conditions for its employees and protect their human rights.

The NHIS will also work for expansion of universal healthcare for all mankind for the sake of their health and happiness, the declaration concludes.
