The first phase of Hyundai Mobis¡¯ project to build so-called Mir Woods in Jincheon, Chungcheongbuk-do, has been open to the public. The project opens a new chapter in the history of corporate social responsibility activities.
The automotive unit of Hyundai Motor Business Group is implementing the Mir Woods Project with Jincheon County and National Nature Trust as part of its efforts to cope with climate change and boost social responsibility, as a global automotive parts maker.
The first phase of the project involves the dedicating and opening of the Natural Co-existence Woods, one of the six specialized woods in a natural ecosystem covering 108 ha.
The Mir Woods, a combination of Korean words, ¡°mir¡± meaning dragon and ¡°ssup¡± meaning forest, is the new name of ¡°Saenggeo Jincheon Hyundai Mobis Woods.¡± Mir Woods originates from the shape of the Chopyeong Reservoir beside the woods looking like a blue dragon surrounding the Korean Peninsula.
The Mir Woods Project is aimed to eliminate artificial things as much as possible and demonstrate the natural features of the forest, particularly focusing on the biodiversity of the woods and preserving the ecosystem, as well as restoration of animal and plant habitats.
Hyundai Mobis has been carrying out the project in stages since 2012 when the company signed an MOU on the project. Dedication is scheduled for 2017. The company plans to hand over the properties to Jicheon Country after dedicating them.
Diverse experience tour programs accompanied by expert guides are to be offered on an appointment basis. Visitors will be given a chance to look at Mir Woods with an explanation by expert guides. Educational programs on the woods and marshes for kindergartners and others are to be established.
Hyundai Mobis plans to hold the Hyundai Mobis Mir Woods Concert twice monthly until October. The concert is to be held under the theme Music Tour to the World, showcasing the dynamics of Hyundai Mobis Walking the Walk around the World and its eco-friendly image.
Hyundai Mobis¡¯ Mir Woods Project is part of the Green Move, one of the top four moves Hyundai Motor Business Group implements. The others are about ¡°Safe Move¡± to dole out transparent umbrellas for safety, ¡°Happy Move¡± for opening juniors¡¯ engineering classes, and ¡°Easy Move¡± to offer aid for handicapped children.
Meanwhile, Hyundai Mobis is ranked sixth amongst global automotive parts makers, according to the U.S. Automotive News in 2014. The company saw production of top three mainstay modules — chassis, driver¡¯s seats and front-end modules-surpass the 100 million mark in 2013.
Albeit short in history, Hyundai Mobis executives and staff have concentrated their efforts on realizing a vision of becoming a global top-five automotive parts maker by 2020.
Those efforts have begun to pay off.
It was in 1999 that Hyundai Mobis was transformed into an automotive parts maker. At that time, Hyundai Mobis struggled to restructure its business portfolios to tide over the Asian financial crisis and explore future revenue streams. Hyundai Mobis disposed of its mainstay businesses — including containers, defense articles and automobiles — to be reborn as an automotive parts maker.
In October 1999, Hyundai Mobis begun to supply chassis modules for Hyundai Motor¡¯s Trajet, a move to roll out modules in a full-fledged fashion. The company has expanded the module scope from simply assembling parts to a stage of integrating functional parts. Production of modules has improved fuel consumption efficiency, cut down on diverse logistics costs and facilitated quality management.
Hyundai Mobis saw production of the top three mainstay modules — chassis, driver¡¯s seats and front-end modules — surpass the 100 million mark in 2013, which was 14 years after the company began to produce modules. The Hyundai Mobis milestone means it has secured global competitiveness in the production of modules.
