Hyundai Motor Group Chung Mong-koo received an honorary engineering doctorate from his alma mater, Hanyang University, on May 29 in recognition of his leadership in the creation of a massive innovation automobile model that combines engineering and business administration. On the same day, Chairman Chung attended a ceremony to dedicate the Chung Mong-koo Future Automobile Research Center at the university, which was built with funds donated by Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung¡¯s foundation.
Chairman Chung said, ¡°I will offer more concern and support for cultivating young gifted manpower that will lead the future of Korea.¡±
The newly dedicated center, situated beside the Open-Air Plaza of the university, is to be utilized as a facility for educating students of the university¡¯s future automobile engineering department, enjoying popularity among students. The five-story structure with a basement floor is fitted with 10 faculty research rooms, 10 lecture rooms, 12 group study rooms and various amenities.
Even though the structure is outfitted with car testing and experimental facilities — consuming large amounts of electricity — the center boasts an eco-friendly design that is certified as a government-approved 1st Class Green Structure.
Chairman Chung called for students and researchers to become leaders in the future automobile industry through creative thinking and endless challenging. The future automobile engineering department, which was spun off from the mechanic engineering department, began to admit freshmen students in the academic year of 2011. All members of the 40-student quota are given a four-year scholarship. Students of the automobile electricity control system engineering master¡¯s degree course are guaranteed a full scholarship, research assistance money and a job at Hyundai Motor Group.
The center is to be utilized as a space to spearhead research on such future automobiles as eco-friendly vehicles and smart cars. Professor Sunwoo Myungho of the future automobile engineering department is acknowledged as an authority in the domestic automobile electricity and electronics control system field. Some 200 researchers from Hyundai Motor are under being educated the wing of Professor Sunwoo.
Hanyang University President Lee Young-moo said, ¡°The Chung Mong-koo Future Automobile Research Center will become a space of learning for realizing dreams and future of students studying automobiles and a birth place of global leaders contributing to the development of mankind.¡±
Chairman Chung was awarded with an honorary engineering doctorate from his alma mater, Hanyang University, the fourth honorary doctorate he has received. He was granted an honorary humanities doctorate from Central Connecticut State University in 1989, an honorary business administration doctorate from the National University of Mongolia in 2001, an honorary business administration doctorate from Korea University in 2003. It is the first time he received an honorary engineering doctorate from his alma mater. He graduated from the university¡¯s industry management administration department in 1967.
Hanyang University said Chairman Chung was recognized for not only his leadership in the creation of the new automobile industry model that combines engineering and business administration, but because he has devoted himself to nurturing future manpower. Chung has been credited with maximizing synergetic effects by completing a vertical integration system ranging from iron mold to cars, and suggesting a new model of sustainable management be sought by creating an eco-friendly, resources recycling business portfolio.
