Samsung C&T and its consortium member firms broke ground on the Riyadh Metro Construction Project in a ceremony toward the end of April in the presence of a number of dignitaries led by Riyadh State Governor, the company said on May 14.
The project will make use of a tunnel boring machine, which is a drilling type of construction equipment which bores tunnels faster than using explosives. It¡¯s especially effective in downtown areas as it doesn¡¯t make too much noises nor does it shake buildings located near the project.
The TBM project in Riyadh is the first to be undertaken in Saudi Arabia to bore a tunnel this large — 9.74 meters in height — and therefore it is very symbolic for the city of Riyadh.
On March 19, the company completed a span of bridge using the Full Span Launching Method, which is the first part to be put into place among the six subway lines being built for the Riyadh Metro Project. The company used the FSLM for its work on the Incheon Grand Bridge and the Honam KTX Railroad in Korea, which doesn¡¯t shorten the project period nor impact traffic flow during the work on the project.
The Riyadh Metro Project is now fully under way. Director Park Shin-kyung, in charge of the Samsung C&T jobsite, said the Riyadh Metro Project is a complex project requiring high capability to undertake the subway construction projects as it involves the know-how to work on railroad construction and other infrastructure, since an overall railroad system work was ordered. ¡°We need close cooperation among members of the consortium as Samsung C and T has been undertaking its part of the project without a hitch based on its experiences taking advantage of its construction technologies in various kinds of construction projects,¡± Park said.
The current TBM project is preceded by Samsung C&T¡¯s work to lay a section of the bridge on Full Span Launching Method.
The Riyadh Metro Project involves the construction of six subway lines in Riyadh with the Samsung C&T consortium taking charge of three of them, with a total length of 64.5 km with 24 stations along the lines at a total cost of $7.9 billion.
Samsung C&T got the project as a member of the consortium that includes FCC of Spain, and Alsthom of France with the completion target set for October 2018.
Samsung Construction is engaged in the construction of 340 km of extended railroad connected with the Roy Hill Project in Australia and the project to build 233 km of railroad in Mongolia, in addition to the Doha Metro Project in Qatar and other global railroad construction projects to boost its reputation as a builder of railroads around the world.
Samsung C&T, as a member of the FAST consortium, has received a letter of award by the Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA) to oversee the Package III (lines 4, 5, and 6) portion to build a massive subway network in the streets of the Saudi Arabian capital, Riyadh. The contract includes the design, construction and commissioning of lines 4 (orange), 5 (yellow) and 6 (purple), which will have 25 stations. Construction will include 64.6 kilometers of rail track: 29.8 kilometers of viaduct, 26.6 kilometers of underground track and 8.2 kilometers of aboveground track.
