Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and driver assistance systems (DAS) have become the much-talked-about topic of the global automobile industry, since they are designed not only to improve drivers¡¯ safety and convenience, but also to be essential for self-driving. Hyundai Mobis is accelerating efforts to narrow down technology gaps and localize core modules and functions.
The Korean automotive parts maker is developing or mass-producing lane departure warning systems (LDWS)/lane keeping assist systems (LKAS), high-beam assistants (HBA)/adaptive driving beams (ADB), autonomous emergency braking (AEB), and systems developed to automate/adapt/enhance vehicle systems for safety and better driving.
In a related development, the company saw production of top three mainstay modules — chassis, driver¡¯s seats and front-end modules — surpass 100 million mark in 2013.
Hyundai Mobis, an automotive unit of Hyundai Motor Business Group, is ranked sixth in global automotive parts makers, according to the U.S. Automotive News in 2014.
Albeit short in history, Hyundai Mobis executives and staff have concentrated their efforts on realizing a vision of becoming a global top-five automotive parts maker by 2020. Those efforts have begun to pay off.
It was in 1999 that Hyundai Mobis was transformed into an automotive parts maker. At that time, Hyundai Mobis struggled to restructure its business portfolios to tide over the Asian financial crisis and explore future revenue streams. Hyundai Mobis disposed of its mainstay businesses — including containers, defense articles and automobiles — to be reborn as an automotive parts maker.
In October 1999, Hyundai Mobis begun to supply chassis modules for Hyundai Motor¡¯s Trajet, a move to roll out modules in a full-fledged fashion. The company has expanded the module scope from simply assembling parts to a stage of integrating functional parts. Production of modules has improved fuel consumption efficiency, cut down on diverse logistics costs and facilitated quality management.
Hyundai Mobis saw production of the top three mainstay modules — chassis, driver¡¯s seats and front-end modules — surpass the 100 million mark in 2013, which was 14 years after the company began to produce modules. The Hyundai Mobis milestone means it has secured global competitiveness in the production of modules.
The company is now concentrating on the development of automotive application parts, including brakes, lighting, lamps and airbags, as well as ¡°intelligent¡± safety systems. Hyundai Mobis strives to secure future growth engines as the electronic systems¡¯ replacement of conventional mechanical apparatuses is going fast. In particular, Hyundai Mobis is stepping on the gas in the development of core automotive core parts, including advanced driver¡¯s support systems essential for automotive driving, electric vehicles, hydrogen-fueled vehicles and other eco-friendly cars.
Hyundai Mobis is also concentrating on quality management based on technology. The company is striving to upgrade its quality levels in all areas, ranging from modules to core parts in all stages, from development to production logistics and world-class standards.
All operational processes in Korea and abroad will be integrated into efficient systems.
