LS Cable & System has been selected as one of the first group suppliers for Dongfeng Motor, the second largest auto maker in China. The Korean cable maker will supply high-pressure harness cable connectors that are used in environmentally-friendly autos from May.
The Korean cable maker may be able to supply the product for some 100,000 E30 models until 2020, with the Chinese government pushing for the production of environmentally friendly cars to solve a severe air pollution problem in China.
Harness cable connectors are cables that supply power by connecting electronic control systems and communications modules, and control all kinds of sensors. The cable is 600v class, which is much more powerful than the 12v class used in ordinary electric cars.
Chairman Koo Cha-yub said the company has been supplying tailor-made cables with improved quality to the Chinese auto maker in response to rising demand, which led to Dongfeng Motor naming LS Cable & System to be listed amongst its first-tier suppliers. In the days ahead, the company will be able to expand opportunities to get more orders from the Chinese car maker by sharing a roadmap for the development of improved car models, which would help LS Cable & System to further expand its market share in China by taking advantage of its relations with Dongfeng Motor, the CEO said.
Dongfeng Motor was launched in 1969 in Wuhan City, Hubei Province. Today its assets total 25 trillion won and employees number 140,000.
The auto maker set up another car maker for only environmentally friendly cars, and at the same time operates a taxi service firm with electric cars in Wuhan.
LS Cable got into the high-pressure harness cable business for autos in 2009, and began to supply them to BDNT (a joint venture auto maker between Daimler-Benz of Germany and BYD of China). BDNT is an electric car maker. The deal was to supply 120 billion worth of cables until 2017.
