During a media briefing session on Feb. 24, the Seoul Motor Show Organizing Committee said 33 car brands are expected to show off their new cars during the event, six new models among them, nine new models in Asia and 18 models for the first time at the motor show in Seoul.
As of Feb. 24, 108 auto parts makers had applied to participate in the motor show, along with 12 tuning companies and four two-wheeled car companies, the organizing committee said.
The new car models to be unveiled for the first time in the world at the motor show include the K5 of Kia Motors, the Spark of GM Korea, Hyundai Motor’s crossover utility vehicle (CUV) concept car, a commercial vehicle model, Kia Motors passenger concept car, KND-9 and Ssangyong Motor’s concept car XAV.
Included among the 19 new models to be introduced for the first time in Asia are X-Car of Kia Motors that appeared in the movie X-men, which actually was the remodeled Sorrento for the movie; Iorap, nicknamed as a “one liter car” because its fuel efficiency is 100 km per liter to be introduced by Samsung Renault, a Hatchback 308 model and 508 RXH wagon model by Peugeot and Citroen’s C4 Cactus, DS5. Hyundai Motor is expected to bring its first hybrid car model, a plug-in Sonata, to the motor show for its first appearance in Asia. Among those cars models to be introduced for the first time in Korea include BMW’s 640d, Mini John Cooper Works, Ford’s All New Monteo, Lincoln’s All New Lincoln MKX and Volkswagen’s Golf R, among others.
Among the five new car brands that are to be on exhibit for the first time at the motor show include three Lamborghini ] models in the series of Hurakan, SP:1 by Detroit Electric’s electric car model and sedan-type electric car EC7, China’s Sheungrung Motor’s 25-seater bus Duego EX, and an city bus model being developed by the bus production company.
Airstream of the U.S., set up in 1931, is famous for using aluminum plates for its camping cars and domestic electric car maker Kony Auto will for the first time participate in the motor show.
The attendees will be allowed to have test rides in such new autos as hydrogen-powered cars and electric cars. They will be able to listen to lectures from car professionals. The Electric Parts Research Institute will run cars installed with the intelligent traffic system for tests.
Chairman Kim Yong-geun of the organizing committee, said they will try to make the Soul Motor show a premium event in the world auto industry, making it one of the top four motor shows in the world by boosting it to the same level as the Geneva Motor Show. In 2013, some 600,000 attendees came to the show and this year, some 650,000 people are expected to come to the show. Kim expects some 700,000 attendees to come to the next motor show in Seoul in 2017, the same number of attendees that go to the Geneva event.
“We will try to make the show to show off car models to the viewers, not the guides with revealing uniforms to attract the attention of attendees as requested by the auto makers to participate in the event,” the chairman said.
