Safety Inspection for Nuclear Fuel Production Facilities
KNF conducted a special safety inspection on nuclear fuel production facilities on Feb. 9, prior to the Lunar New Year holiday and the upcoming spring season.
Lee and related officials toured nuclear fuel production sites, including nuclear fuel manufacturing processes and the Central Control Room, and encouraged those who are to remain on duty through the holidays.
Lee urged his executives and staff members to strengthen the safety and security of all nuclear facilities, deemed essential for Korea¡¯s national interests, and to take precautionary steps against accidents to brace for the upcoming season.
¡°Cyberspace security is getting more important, and staff members need to be armed with a sense of awareness toward protection of cyberspace and implement without a hitch steps to ensure cyberspace safety, which have already been established,¡± he added.
In a related development, KNF decided to allow the general public to tour the nuclear fuel production facilities as part of efforts to enhance transparency.
Those who want to tour nuclear fuel production facilities are asked to log on to KNF¡¯s website (www,knfc.co.kr) or call KNF at 042-868-1135, 1141. If groups of more than 10 people submit their names and other requirements, they will be allowed to tour the facilities. The one-hour tour will take visitors to the publicity exhibition hall, the process of producing nuclear fuel rods, pellet insertion process, and nuclear fuel assembly process. KNF provides bus services to students and other visitors.
Lee said opening the nuclear fuel facilities to the general public is designed to prevent the public¡¯s misgivings over nuclear power, which are on the rise. People¡¯s first hand look at the production of nuclear fuel will serve as an opportunity to get a better understanding of Korea¡¯s nuclear power prowess and safety.
Meanwhile, KNF representatives toured the Songgang Social Welfare Center near the KNF headquarters and three other welfare facilities to distribute gifts to inmates on Feb. 11, on the occasion of the Lunar New Year holiday.
