East-West Power (EWP) will soon usher in a new era. Dangjin Coal-fired Units 9 and 10, now under construction in Dangjun, Chungcheongnam-do, have finished preparations for their trial operation. Dangjin Coal-fired Units 9 and 10 will each have a capacity of 1 million kW, equivalent to that of a nuclear power unit. The conventional thermal power plants have some 500,000 kW, with the Yeongheung Thermal Power Plant¡¯s capacity of 800,000 kW, the largest one.

The embarking of an era of thermal power generation on such a large scale was owed to the advancement of electricity technology. ¡°As larger boilers cannot generate more heat, coal-fired power units have limited power generation capacity,¡± EWP officials said. ¡°The high-capacity power generation is possible with the development of the high-efficiency technology to turn turbines at a faster speed, but the size of 1 million kW-class units is similar to that of 500,000 kW-class Dangjin units.¡±

¡®Call for Overcoming Challenges Wisely¡¯

In his New Year¡¯s message, EWP President Chang Joo-ok called for his executives and staff members to strengthen their future response capacity to cope with rapidly changing environment surrounding the power generation industry.

¡°EWP is poised to have a turning point for a renaissance with its headquarters being moved to Ulsan and the full introduction of the smart office,¡± President Chang said. ¡°With the arrival of the new year, we have to move a step forward based on efforts and outcomes we¡¯ve achieved so far. ¡°We should solidify our fundamentals through improvement of productivity while ramping up future response capability to brace for rapidly changing conditions surrounding the power generation industry.¡±

Changes surrounding management conditions of the power generation industry are unpredictable, especially with the rapid advancement of IoT, Big Data, 3D Printing, 4D engineering, and power generation-related technologies, said President Chang, adding that thorough reviews, precise planning and strong execution are essential to achieving goals amidst management uncertainties. But the most important thing, he said, in the course of executing duties is values: making EWP a worthwhile worksite that can realize the organization¡¯s vision and individuals¡¯ potential, with a mindset of considering and respecting each other.

EWP¡¯s Support to SMEs

EWP has opened an exhibition hall to display the excellent products of SMEs as part of its efforts to promote shared growth and co-prosperity with SMEs.

EWP President Chang, other executives and SMEs, including Seco President Song Yo-sup and BMT President Yoon Jong-chan, participated in a ceremony to open the exhibition hall located on the second floor of EWP¡¯s headquarters in Ulsan on Jan. 15.

A selection of 10 SMEs have their R&D finished products, NEP and NET certificate items and other excellent products on display for one year. All 84 SME companies, which have maintained business ties with EWP for the past decade, will be given chances to exhibit their products at the exhibition hall.

EWP has offered a helping hand to SME¡¯s marketing activities by arranging separate exhibition halls accommodating some 30 items across the nation and assigning coordinators to consult SMEs on marketing.

The power company has built an online export exhibition website (http://ewpsmba.buykorea.org) designed to support SMEs¡¯ overseas marketing activities. Forty items from EWP¡¯s 19 cooperative companies are posted on the website to promote their online overseas sales.

EWP plans to pursue the implementation of diverse institutional policies and activities to promote co-prosperity and shared growth with its cooperative SMEs, to give a helping hand to the SMEs suffering from the hard times.
