In his New Year message on Jan. 2, Korea Power Exchange (KPX) President Yoo Sang-hee urged his executives and staff members to spearhead change, bracing for a crisis, and make preparations to be reborn into an institution that can parlay crises into opportunities.
¡°We have a heavy heart with a myriad of problems that befall us, but if all of us are united with a mindset of turning unexpected difficulties into opportunities, the year 2015 will be an eventful year in which KPX is reborn into a new institution,¡± President Yoo said.
KPX has experienced hard times since its inauguration in 2001, particular 2012 and 2013 since the rolling blackouts on Sept. 15, 2011. And KPX also had hard times in 2014 with its core function, energy management system (EMS), and operation of the electricity market under outside criticism.
¡°If we admit of a lack of communication and capacity, and we innovate ourselves with one united mindset of turning over a new leaf, KPX will be reborn into a charming one,¡± Yoo said.
¡°We now have to make a fresh start by revamping our organization and systems,¡± he added. ¡°Change always brings difficulties and burdens. KPX will be reborn into a new institution with our full support and care. Now KPX will embark on the new year with a charming and confidant face and renewed commitment to national mission.¡±
¡°This is a year with many pending issues. We have to not only perform new expected functions amidst rapidly changing electricity industry conditions and strengthen and build internal capacity and integrity. A shift in the paradigm of the power industry and changes of related laws and systems could change a crisis into opportunities according to how to cope with them,¡± he said.
¡°KPX will have to spearhead change by bracing for changes and a crisis and making preparations to be reborn into an institution that can convert crises into opportunities,¡± he said.
He expounded the following core tasks KPX will implement during this year.
First, he called for the early and successful implementation of management innovation plans — the Management Innovation Office announced based on opinion views. ¡°Everyone, giving weight to organization rather than individuals, should accept the introducing of futuristic organization and competition systems that can maximize our capacity and work efficiency,¡± he said.
¡°The management innovation plans are the first step of our efforts to share future, communication, creativity, and happiness with you I expounded as the top four management tenets when I took office. Now it is the beginning, and if you have better ideas down the road, you are asked to do not hesitate to make suggestions. I will work toward making KPX a happy worksite by translating them into action with full considerations, not just lending an ear to ideas.¡±
¡°As you know, 2015 will be a year when the power industry is expected to undergo much changes in terms of industry conditions stemming from government policies. We have to play a central role in suggesting the right direction of the changes to contribute much to the development of the state,¡± he said.
In particular, advancing the Korean power industry to levels of advanced countries is a key issue in which KPX will have to take the initiative in suggesting solutions.
¡°From now on, it is a time when market efficiency and fair game rules are required. Of late, smart grids, an emission trading system and other power market-related issues are how things will look heading into the future power industry with KPX taking the initiative. We have to demonstrate a strong leadership in the areas,¡± Yoo said.
KPX President Yoo emphasized the security of KPX, whose disruption would bring about a national crisis, as demonstrated by security-related incidents of late.
He also stressed KPX¡¯s core mission of stabilizing Korea¡¯s power supply. In particular, he said KPX will have to ensure the improving and efficient operation of the newly installed energy management system.
Yoo called for the advancement of a process of establishing power supply plans to levels of advanced countries.
He also urged his executives and staff members to take an attitude of serving the people as public servants.
Last but not least, KPX President Yoo alluded to a leader¡¯s attributes. He cited leaders who can get rid themselves of distrust and harmonize people through communication between seniors and juniors, show off reliability and continuity based on expertise and integrity, respect others with warm-heartedness and passion, and get rid of selfish interests for the sake of the job and organization.
