SK Telecom President Ha Sung-min said his company will maintain leadership in a smart era by firming up telecommunications network technology and innovating services and promoting shared growth.
Ha made the remarks at a speech at a ceremony to mark the 30th anniversary of its foundation at the SK Telecom headquarters in Uljiro, downtown Seoul, on March 27. “SK Telecom’s growth and Korea’s rise to an ICT powerhouse is owed to support and cooperation from customers and business partners. We’ll make preparations for the coming 30 years with a challenging spirit and innovation,” he said.
The company said it will devote itself to firming up ICT technologies, such as telecommunications networks and software, to take the lead in a future smart society and to be connected with the Internet of Things (IoT). In particular, the company plans to do its utmost in ramping up the quality of its telecommunications network and advancing to the 5G era.
The nation’s largest telecom provider plans to offer new convergence services such as the “T Phone,” combining a mobile phone, position information, and Big Data.
The company also announced plans to ramp up open collaboration regimes with SMEs, start-ups, and individual developers and to expand shared growth programs, including the Bravo Restart Program designed to extend a helping hand to middle aged and elderly people who want to launch start-up businesses.
SK Telecom, established on March 29, 1984, ventured into the car phone service business that same year and launched a mobile phone service business in 1988. The company made inroads into the Korean mobile telecommunications service business by acquiring a majority share in the now-defunct Korean Mobile Comm-unication, the predecessor of SK Telecom.
SK Telecom is synonymous with the history of the Korean mobile telecommunications service industry, and the company will likely play a leading role in ushering in an IoT era, an SK Telecom official said.
