Chairman Lee Jai-seong of Hyundai Heavy Industries Co.(HHI) in his New Year¡¯s address, said the global economy is projected to be on the recovery phase this year, but not substantial enough to break out of the low-growth mold completely. On top of the economic situation, the competition among industries to protect their boundaries has been intensifying with the walls between them being removed leading to complicated and uncertain management environment.
We also have to continue to be on the alert to navigate through the difficult waters and fight off the tough problems ahead, with the crises hanging around us and ready to pounce on us whenever there are weak points in our operation like tsunamis, the chairman said.
The world¡¯s largest shipbuilder set a target of $29.6 billion in orders for 2014 and a sales target of 26.57 trillion won, up 9 percent from last year.
¡°I would like to urge every one to work hard to achieve the targets for continuous development of HHI so it can continue to be the leader in the global shipbuilding industry,¡± Lee urged.
¡°We got to have creativity, reform, and new challenges,¡± securing technology leadership, air-tight plans and implementation, settlement of management abiding by laws and regulations and management-labor culture based on trust and harmony to once again make HHI a corporation that can achieve your dreams, the chairman said.
The chairman and CEO unveiled four major management strategies for this year including projecting market changes way ahead and be prepared to cope with them and expand the technology leadership base by strengthening the cooperation between the marketing dep¡¯t and the R&D sector and boost the technology levels by the highly trained personnel so that the company would continue to hold on to its leadership in the shipbuilding industry worldwide.
The chairman also called for the company should adhere to international legal standards to solidify its global leadership as an advanced company. In order to bring this about, each individual officer and staff working for the company should enhance their ethical standards to settle down the corporate culture to uphold the company¡¯s ethical standards and boost the company¡¯s public trust and reputation around the world, Lee said.
He also called for making the company a place to achieve the dreams of its employees based on the trust and harmony between management and labor. Adhering to safety rules must be made a habit and make thorough check ups on all the work places and work processes in the company with a new insight.
¡°Never find comforts in the past achievements and make our company a place to make new challenges to make HHI a greater shipbuilder,¡± Lee called out. We have to clean up old bad habits from the days past as society wants the higher yard sticks to measure our performances under rational processes and compliance standards for laws and regulations and be transparent in all of the company¡¯s operation, the chairman added. We have to remove all the walls so that an atmosphere will be created in which we can always understand and respect each other, the CEO said.
We also have to work hard to make the company a safe and pleasant workplace for all of us, preventing all kinds of mishaps before hand for our precious lives, the happiness of our families, and maintain the value of our company, Lee said.
The new year being the year of horse in the lunar calendar, we got to have progressive ideas and make the year a dynamic one for the company so that we can run harder for the company, the chairman urged.
