this year during the 50th Trade Day ceremony held at Coex in Seoul on Dec. 5.
President Park Bong-kyun won the Industrial Merit Gold Tower Medal during the 50th Trade Day ceremony held on Dec. 5 at COEX in southern Seoul. He was recognized for his success in exploring overseas market for SK Energy¡¯s products and the investments in technologies related to oil exploration during his 30-year career in the industry, boosting the company¡¯s exports to 27 trillion won in 2012, the highest in the oil industry, the letter accompanying the medal said.
The enviable record came during a year with tough economic conditions and expansion in oil refining capacities in oil producing nations. As of the second quarter of this year the company¡¯s oil exports accounted for 52 percent of its entire revenue.
SK Energy made sure to prevent mishaps by checking the safety control systems and the operation trends to preclude any accidents. The company also made sure that its operation technologies to secure operability and reliability in its operation processes are all right.
SK Energy also wanted to make sure that its technologies are tops in the world through technology exchanges with licensors and carrying out global technology business support deals, especially in such areas as Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America in order for the company to make advancements in those strategic regions.
In 2009, the company signed an agreement on operation and maintenance of the Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Co. in Vietnam, successfully securing its foothold in Southeast Asia with Vietnam being the nation with the potential to become a big oil market in the region.
SK Energy¡¯s oil refining complex in Ulsan, with the daily oil refining capacity of 840,000 barrels, is the second largest single oil refining facility in the world with the complex taking up 2.5 million pyeong in space, three times the size of Jeju Island, with oil and oil products storage capacity at the complex of 39 million barrels, enough to meet the oil requirements of Korea for 20 days.
Not satisfied with the oil refining capacities, the company built heavy oil upgrading facilities to the extent that it will account for 40 percent of the refined oil products at the Ulsan complex and turn low-priced residual oil products into high-priced light oil products such as gasoline, kerosene, and diesel. As of this year, the company cracks 175,000 barrels of heavy oil into light oil products to solidify its position as a supplier of light oil in the Northeast Asian region.
