The total production of cars by both Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors at home and abroad surpassed 80 million units as of Oct. 31, the two automakers said on Nov. 11.

The surprising news comes 50 years after the two leading Korean automakers began producing their own cars, with Hyundai starting with the production of the Cortina at its Ulsan auto plant in Korea in 1968 and Kia turning out the K-360, the three-wheeled truck at its Sohari auto plant in 1962.

It took until 1993, 30 years, for the two carmakers to turn out their first 10 million cars, but only six more years to reach the 20 million-car mark. The two automakers turned out 30 million cars by 2003 due to their extensive sales campaigns around the world, followed by 40 million cars by 2006 and 50 million cars by 2009. The auto production by the two car makers hit 70 million units in 2012 and it took only two more years to reach 80 million cars. About 74 percent, or 59.88 million cars, were produced at auto plants in Korea.

If those cars were lined up in a row, the length would be long enough to wrap around the world nine times (with the Avante as the average model), and if they were laid out flat after being taken apart, they will take more space than the entire space of Seoul City at 605 square km.

The model that has been produced the most is the Avante, whose production started in 1990 under the name Elantra, at 9.1 million units, followed by the Sonata with 6.73 million units, and the Accent with 6.63 million units.

Hyundai produces 20 car models including 19 that are also produced at overseas car plants, while Kia produces 17 models with eight models produced overseas.

In the meantime, Chairman Chung, for the first time, attended a ceremony to unveil a new car model when the new Genesis sedan was debuted recently to show the public that Hyundai cars are as good as they used to be in the wake of the recall of some Hyundai car models in recent months.

Hyundai Motor Group has kicked off rounds of history lessons for its employees at its head office in Yangjae-dong, southern Seoul, from September until the end of this year, the group said.

Chairman Chung Mong-koo believes that selling Korean-made cars is like selling the Korean culture and in order to understand the Korean culture, one has to learn the Korean history and the histories of other nations. To sell Korean-made cars, the salesmen have to have a global mind, which can come from learning world history and Korean culture and history, the chairman claimed.

A total of 10 classes will be held to teach Korean history and world history by invited university professors.

Chairman Chung said a car salesman should have a “sure historical view” and only then, he will love the company, the country, and himself. “When such a car salesman sells cars, he will be selling the Korean culture, too, which will be a major power for us in the global car market,” Chung claimed.

“Both Hyundai and Kia represent Korea, a truly huge responsibility and a great mission. Therefore, all of those involved with global activities for the two automakers should take the lessons seriously so that they can tell the customers around the globe something about our proud Korean culture and history,” the chairman said.

In recognition of the chairman’s remarks on the history lessons, both Hyundai and Kia included Korean history in the examinations for new employees in the second half of last year to the surprise of the applicants. Korean history was also included in the training program for the newly employed for the two automakers in the form of discussions so that they are always conscious of the history lessons. The automakers are said to hold history lessons for the employees from time to time so that they can always remember Korean history while discharging their daily chores.

In the meantime, both Hyundai Motor and its sister Kia Motors have been able to boost their market shares in Europe to 6.5 percent as of the end of Q3 this year with the rising popularity of their cars introduced in the European car markets, especially the Genesis and Soul. Riding on the new popularity of their new car models, they will strive to rank among the five largest carmakers in the European car market.

Hyundai Motor’s sales from January to September this year came to 327,907 cars, down 1.6 percent YoY, but it’s not bad considering that the sale of all cars in Europe fell around 4 percent YoY during the first three quarters of this year. Kia Motors sold 258,545 cars in the same period, up 0.3 percent YoY, leading to hikes in the market share of the two Korean car makers to 6.5 percent to rank them ninth in terms of cars sales in Europe.
