Those in the Korean display industry, including representative from business, academia, research, and government circles, have gotten together to pledge their solid collaboration to take the lead in the future of the global display market through shared growth.
Roughly 300 people gathered to mark the fourth anniversary of Display Day at a ceremony at the Grand InterContinental Hotel in Samseong-dong, Seoul, on Oct. 1. Among those on hand at the event were Vice Minister for Industry and Technology Kim Jae-hong of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE); Samsung Display President Kim Ki-nam, concurrently chairman of the Korea Display Industry Association (KDIA); and LG Display President Han Sang-beom.
Display Day is observed during the first week of October to mark Korea¡¯s posting $10 billion worth of display exports in October 2006, and this year¡¯s one fell on Oct. 1.
The anniversary event not only served as an occasion for the Korean display industry to evaluate its achievement in continuing to dominate the global market with a 48.4 percent share during 2012, exporting $34.9 billion to rank fifth among Korea¡¯s mainstay export items, and hiring some 127,000 employees, but it was also a moment for the industry¡¯s members, both large and small, to renew their determination to maintain the global leadership through collaboration between large- and small-sized display companies amidst fierce challenges from their overseas competitors over next-generation models.
In his commemorative speech, Vice Minister Kim extended words of encouragement to the Korean display industry¡¯s efforts to maintain the number one global position since 2002 and stressed the inheritance of Korea¡¯s being a ¡®global display powerhouse legend¡¯ by overcoming the challenges by rival countries by capitalizing on its technological competitiveness and differentiating itself from its rivals. Kim went on to say that the government pushes forward aggressive policies to ensure the sustainability of the Korean display industry.

During the anniversary event, 35 people were presented with diverse prizes, including the Industrial Service Medal in recognition for their contribution to the development of the national display industry.
The top honor went to Kwak Jin-oh, executive director of Samsung Display for the development and commercialization of the world¡¯s first matrix-switching touch-screen panel (TSP) for smartphone display, while Kim Sang-muck, vice president of MNtech, was awarded the Presidential Citation in recognition for localizing optical films resulting in import substitution.
Choi Young-suk, managing director of LG Display, was awarded the Prime Minister¡¯s Citation for developing an LCD production process and localizing materials. Among the 10 winners of the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy¡¯s Citation was Ahn Tae-hwan, executive director of Kolon Industries, for localizing such display materials as dry film and photoresist. The Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy¡¯s Prize went to four people, including Lee Soong-eun, a division chief of Merck Advanced Technology, for the development of ultra-high definition (UHD) liquid crystal TV.
Vice Minister Kim also presided over the first meeting of the 2013 Display Shared Growth Committee to take stock of the outcomes of shared growth efforts among large- and small-display companies.
This past July 4, MOTIE, the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association (KSIA), and the Korea Display Industry Association (KDIA) held a ceremony to sign an agreement to build an environment for mutual cooperation and boost their determination to pursue shared growth at the Eltower in Yangjae-dong, southeastern Seoul. Approximately 120 people from government and industry circles were present at the event. Among those on hand were Vice Minister for Industry and Technology Kim; Samsung Display President Kim Ki-nam, who is concurrently KDIA chairman; Woo Nam-sung, president of Samsung Electronics LSI Business Division; President Park Sung-wook of SK Hynix; President Choi Chang-shik of Dongbu HiTek; Senior Executive Vice President Chung Chul-dong of LG Display; Jusung Engineering President Hwang Chul-ju, and other primary and secondary cooperative company representatives.
