The Busan Port Authority (BPA) participated in 2026 IAPH-KMI Forum in Tokyo on July 27 and presented its strategies to make Busan Port a digitalized smart port.
The forum was hosted by the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) and the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) under the themes “Decarbonization, Digitalization and Efficiency.”
About 100 port officials and experts around the world on hand at the event shared policies and technologies on port sustainability and digital transformation as well as prominent examples.
Koo Ja-lim, head of the Global Business Group at BPA, stressed the significance of securing cargo visibility amid global supply chains uncertainties under the theme “Busan Port’s Strategies to Build a Digitalized Smart Port.”
BPA also introduced Busan Port’s major digital services, such as the Vehicle Booking System, the Transshipment Shuttle System (TSS), the e-Slip and the transshipment monitoring system “Port-i” and examples designed to raise port efficiency and users’ convenience through data-based operation.
BPA President Song Sang-keun said on July 28, “Ports’ digitalization transformation is an essential factor designed to ramp up the stability and resilience of global supply chains beyond operational efficiency, and we will spearhead the smart port sector by aggressively sharing Busan Port’s digitalization transformation experiences and expanding data cooperation with global ports.”

Busan Open Port 2026 Taking Place to Expand Ecosystem of Venture Companies in Maritime and Port Sector
Busan Open Port 2026, designed to expand the ecosystem of venture companies in the maritime and port sector, took place at the Busan Port International Exhibition & Convention Center (BPEX) on July 22.
The event was jointly hosted by the Busan Port Authority, the Busan Regional Industrial Promotion Institute (RIIA) and Busan United Holdings.
It was designed to explore ways of connecting Busan Port’s wharf operators and startups and provide opportunities for promising startups’ innovative technologies to be applied to port fields.
The six startups, selected by the sponsors, released their creative and innovative technologies and solutions, such as raising of port efficiency, logistics optimization and eco-friendly and safety improvement steps.
The maritime and port startups set up booths to demonstrate their technology prowess and conduct marketing activities.
BPA President Song Sang-keun said, “We’ll strive to lower barriers so that excellent and innovative companies can enter Busan Port and related industry sites, and I expect the six startups’ innovative solutions to serve as a catalyst to raise the productivity and safety of Busan Port’s field sites.”
BPA Teams Up with HD Hyundai Samho on Development of Physical AI-Based Port Equipment and Future Technologies
The Busan Port Authority signed an MOU on the development of physical AI-based port equipment and future technologies with HD Hyundai Samho on July 30.
The deal calls for ramping up cooperation in R&D and building continued technology cooperation base with the Korean port equipment maker to make Busan Port a Korean-type smart port.
Under the agreement, the two institutions are expected to promote cooperation in areas, such as smart port solutions, physical AI technology-applied port equipment R&D, port operation system R&D, port equipment prevention and maintenance technology R&D and development crane parts upgrade technologies.
