Korea East-West Power (EWP) has put in full gear a core infrastructure designed to stabilize Jeju¡¯s power grid. EWP held a ceremony to dedicate a battery energy storage system (BESS) power plant in Bukchon, Jeju, on Jan. 27.

The event was attended by about 100 people from Jeju Energy Corp., Korea Electric Power Corp. and related organizations and neighborhood residents, including Vice Gov. Jin Myung-gi of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, EWP President Kwon Myung-ho.

The BESS power plant is a power storage facility with the nation¡¯s largest capacity of a combined 140MWh.

It is capable of storing up left-over power being generated for hours of much renewable energy power and supplying it for high-demand hours.

The Jeju area has a frequent mismatch of power supply and demand since renewable energies, such as photovoltaic power and wind power, have a higher power generation portion.

In particular, when power supply is abundant, power output controls are put in place frequently to restrict renewable energy generation.

The BESS plant serves as a buffer for the power grid to connect left-over power and high power demand hours, making up for structural limitations.

It is also in charge of improving the stability of power frequency and voltage and supplementing the intermittency of renewable energies.

In 2023, that EWP was designated as a central contract market player.

The BESS power plant project was launched in May 2025 and the plant went into operation in January 2026.

The plant, which has the nation¡¯s largest battery capacity, can store enough power for about 400 households to consume each month.

It is expected to secure the stability of Jeju¡¯s power gird for the next 15 years and contribute to utilizing renewable energies more efficiently.

EWP President Kwon said, ¡°The BESS power plant is a core facility responsible for the instability of the power grid in Jeju¡¯s journey for achieving carbon neutrality.¡±

EWP plans to expand the BESS power plant business to other parts of the nation based on the experiences related to the operation of the Jeju Bukchon BESS Power Plant, thus contributing to not only ensuring the stability of the national power gird and but also raising the execution of energy transition policies.

EWP Teams Up with Samsung SDI to Implement Joint ESS and Renewable Energy Projects

Samsung SDI will join forces with Korea East-West Power to jointly carry out global development and investment projects in the energy storage system (ESS) and renewable energy sectors.

Samsung SDI struck an MOU on joint global energy generation business with EWP at Stellantis Plus Energy (SPE) in Kokomo, Indiana, on Feb. 6. SPE, officially known as StarPlus Energy, is a joint venture between Samsung SDI and Stellantis.

Under the deal, both sides will jointly develop and invest energy power generation projects, such as ESS in Korea and abroad while seeking to explore new business models, such as renewable energy connectivity and power grid stabilization projects.

The two plan to build a partnership in the whole of the energy sector like the joint implementation of managed service provider projects in Samsung SDI¡¯s worksite in Ulsan.

They agreed to expand the scope of cooperation by continuously exploring joint business opportunities in the global energy market while leading joint efforts to cope with supply chain environment changes.

Both sides stress that the Korean major battery maker and the energy public entity will bring about real business outcomes by cooperating in the global market in the ESS and renewable energy sectors whose global demand is on a sharp rise.

Samsung SDI has a variety of ESS product portfolio ranging from supplementary power cells and modules, such as the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and the battery backup unit to power ESS solutions, such as the Samsung Battery Box.

Samsung SDI, a non-Chinese prismatic battery maker, boasts of excellent durability, high energy density and ¡°No-Thermal Propagation¡± (No-TP) technology aimed at preventing the spread of heat in EV batteries.

EWP has accumulated power plant construction and operation capabilities by implementing overseas power projects in the United States, Australia, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia.

The power company is evaluated to have expanded business models combining power generation infrastructure and energy solutions like the nation¡¯s first power generation-connected ESS buildup and the operation of an MSP center.

EWP Strikes MOU to Jointly Develop New Energy Business Projects in Seoul Metropolitan Area

Korea East-West Power signed an MOU with E1 to jointly implement new business projects at EWP headquarters on Feb. 25.

The latest deal is designed to upgrade a partnership both companies have built since their striking of a basic agreement on the Yeosu Green Community Energy Project in 2025.
