S-OIL received the Order of Industrial Service Merit, Gold Tower from the government.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy presented orders and other government awards to a combined 40 people of national merit on the occasion of the ¡°2025 Foreign Company Day¡± at Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas on Nov. 13.
CEO Anwar A. Al-Hejazi of S-OIL was honored with the Order of Industrial Service Merit, Gold Tower.
S-OIL was recognized for implementing the 9.3 trillion-won Shaheen Project and refinery and petrochemical equipment integration.
CEO Anwar A. Al-Hejazi, based on an excellent leadership, has been selected as one of individuals of national merit who have greatly contributed to raising the fundamental competitiveness of the Korean petrochemical industry and the development of the industry by successfully implementing the 9.3 trillion won Shaheen Project, designed to ramp up petrochemical portfolio, to respond to energy transition in advance and ensure sustainable growth.
He has been praised for strengthening R&D in the refinery and petrochemical sectors and laying a foundation for new growth engine technology development by deciding a 263 billion won gas turbine power plant project designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in November 2024 and dedicating a TS&D center in Magok, Seoul, in September 2023.
CEO Anwar A. Al-Hejazi has been recognized for his great contribution to the development of the national economy through continuous investments in conventional and new businesses, such as becoming the first Korean refinery company to supply sustainable aviation fuel to a regular flight route.
CEO Anwar A. Al-Hejazi said, ¡°I will do myself to successfully carrying out the Shaheen Project based on the winning of this prize and full support of the Korean government and elevating not only the competitiveness of the Korean petrochemical industry but also S-OIL to the next level.¡±
He expressed hope this will serve as an opportunity to further expand the scope of business cooperation between Korea and Saudi Arabia and jointly lead future growth of both countries.
The Shaheen Project S-OIL has been implementing is the biggest-ever petrochemical project being done in Korea and the world¡¯s biggest-ever petrochemical steam cracker construction project.
In particular, the project takes on significance strategically to all of both countries, Korea and Saudi Arabia since it involves the world¡¯s first commercial application of the Thermal Crude to Chemical Process (TC2C), devolved by Saudi Aramco, the mother company of S-OIL.
The Shaheen Project is also expected to be a project designed to ramp the fundamental competitiveness of the Korean petrochemical industry, facing a crisis, caused by expanding of advanced equipment in the region, such as China.
CEO Anwar A. Al-Hejazi, of Saudi birth, took office as representative director & CEO, S-OIL Corporation on May 2023.
CEO Anwar A. Al-Hejazi gained a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia, and he has been accumulated rich experiences in a variety of areas, such as petroleum gas production facility management, project development, investment localization, super mega-project management and facility planning while he has been working with Saudi Aramco for 27 years from 1996.
CEO Anwar A. Al-Hejazi had served as CEO of Aramco Asia Japan since 2016 and spearheaded strategic investment development and building of cooperative relations with Korean, Chinese and Japanese companies as CEO of Aramco Asia overseeing the Asian region since 2018.
In particular, he contributed greatly to leading to a final decision-making of the Shaheen Project in November 2022.
The Order of Industrial Service Merit, Silver Tower went to Executive Vice President Noh Sung of ON Semiconductor Korea, a global leader of the power semiconductor and SiC sector, which has been expanding its investment in Korea.
Other prize winners were praised for attracting FDIs in advanced industry sectors, such as semiconductor and secondary battery areas.
The MOTIR expected the prize winners to contribute to the development of advanced industries and stabilizing supply chains through their active corporate activities.
