Korea Marine Environment Management Corp. (KOEM) held the ¡°Ocean Climate Change Surveillance and Prediction Forum¡± at Kensington Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul, on Oct. 22. 

The forum was attended by about 100 people from government, academic circles, experts and related organizations. 

The forum was hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) and organized by KOEM. 

It was designed to raise public awareness and understanding of the importance of ocean climate change surveillance and prediction and provide an opportunity of discussion among industry, academic and research circles to ramp up ocean observation and climate change forecasting capabilities. 

A theme presentation session covered topics, such as the ocean and fisheries sector¡¯s climate change prediction information production and prediction technology development plans, Korea¡¯s ocean climate change observation and ocean satellite technology development, and actual measurement of the Arctic for exploring North Pole routes and development of glacier change prediction technologies.

At a discussion session, participants shared policy recommendations, such as ways of strengthening ocean climate prediction capabilities and promoting international cooperation, and Korea¡¯s standing for building an international climate watch network and ways of ramping surveillance capabilities. 

KOEM CEO Kang Yong-seok said, ¡°Through this forum, we will do our utmost to ramp up Korea¡¯s ocean climate change surveillance and prediction capabilities, and promote ocean data research and technology development, policy utilization and public understanding.¡±

KOEM Signs Agreement with Koai on Verification Cooperation System for On-Device AI, Off-Shore Drone

KOEM struck a deal on a verification cooperation system for an on-device AI, off-shore drone with Koai, an off-shore drone technology company, at KOEM Research Institute on Oct. 24.

The deal is designed to build a verification cooperation system involving AI-oriented R&D tasks with participation by public organizations and companies in accordance with government policies. 

Koai is the manager of a consortium on a project to verify on-device AI services for Busan, a maritime city, organized by Busan IT Industry Promotion Agency. 

The project is a task awarded by the Ministry of Science and ICT. 

KOEM plans to provide full support to Koai¡¯s on-device AI verification project using expertise manpower and shipping and facility infrastructure owned by public entities in the marine environment sector. 

Both institutions are expected to contribute to promoting digital transformation in the marine environment area and building an innovative ecosystem by verifying and upgrading AI-based marine environment surveillance and pollution prevention response technologies. 

Kim Wook, head of the Marine Pollution Control Headquarters at KOEM, said, ¡°The contract will be a turning point in the application of AI technologies in the marine pollution response sector, and KOEM will ramp up technology and safety levels of managing future marine environment by combining the private sector¡¯s innovation technologies and the public sector¡¯s field capabilities.¡±


KOEM Conducts Maritime Purification Drive, This Year¡¯s Second One

KOEM conducted a maritime purification campaign, this year¡¯s second one, off unmanned islet areas in Sokcho and Yangyang from Oct. 31 until Nov. 1.

A combined 30 people from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, KOEM and other organizations, participated in the drive. Participants gathered about 2 tons of maritime wasters, including waste fishing gear around islands in Sokcho and Yangyang and under sea.
