Samsung C&T Construction Group has struck a strategic partnership with GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH), a global small modular reactor (SMR) company.

Samsung C&T said the company signed a deal on SMR projects in Stockholm, Sweden, on Oct. 6. With the signing of the agreement, the two companies plan to lead the global SMR market based on Samsung C&T¡¯s track record of successful projects in the nuclear power and infrastructure sectors and GVH¡¯s verified technologies.

GVH is a joint venture company established by General Electric of the United States and Hitachi of Japan in 2007 for nuclear power development.

GVH is evaluated to be a global SMR player by developing ¡°BWRX-300,¡± a 300MW SMR technology based on the improving of the boiling water reactor.

GVH and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) are implementing a project to build one of the four BWRX-300s in Ontario, Canada, the first SMR project in the Western world.

Vattenfall, Sweden¡¯s state-run power company, has selected BWRX-300 as the final candidate of the Ringhals nuclear power project.

Under the latest agreement, Samsung C&T is expected to participate in the whole process, ranging from an initial stage of the SMR project to the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) as a strategic partner in Europe, Southeast Asia and Middle Eastern regions.

Samsung C&T President Oh Se-chul said, ¡°We plan to provide optimal energy solutions by combining Samsung C&T¡¯s EPC capabilities and GVH¡¯s SMR technologies and Samsung C&T will aggressively expand SMR projects in the global market through collaboration.¡±

Meanwhlie, Samsung C&T is expanding the SMR business sector in partnership with GVH in Sweden and Estonia.

Samsung C&T is strengthening its presence as a global SMR leader by participating in the front-end engineering design (FEED) phase of Romania's SMR project in cooperation with NuScale of the United States, Fluor and Sargent & Lundy.

Samsung C&T Completes Test-Bed for Realizing ¡°Next Home,¡± Samsung C&T¡¯s Future Housing Model

Samsung C&T Construction Group, leading housing culture innovation in Korea, is coming close to realizing the future of housing.

Samsung C&T Construction Group said on Sept. 29 the contractor had completed a test-bed for realizing ¡°Next Home¡± next-generation housing technologies at the Dongbaek District, Giheung-gu, Yongin City, Gyeonggi-do.

Next Home is Samsung C&T¡¯s future housing model, designed to offer differentiated housing experiences through space changes tailored to meet customers¡¯ needs and in accordance with occupants¡¯ lifestyles, departing from the conventional fixed unit inside structure.

In August 2023, Samsung C&T released a future housing model blueprint under the theme ¡°Raemian, the Next.¡±

The contractor has completed innovative space in about two years following endless technology development and verification.

The test-bed, covering 554 square meters in floor space and three floors, encompasses key technologies for future housing space standards, such as ¡°Next Rahmen,¡± a new concept plane structure without unit inside pillars and ¡°Next In-Fill,¡± a system designed to fill housing space like drawers with pre-produced modules.

The structure can allow visitors to experience innovative space in person by building two specialized units with the core technologies, each with 84 sq. meters in floor space.

The two units are: a studio for one or two people with the Next Rahmen structure and infrastructure technologies supporting the structure; and another unit for three or four persons, stressing major Next In-fill functions.
