LG Chem announced on Sept. 29 that it has completed the development of a liquid photo-imageable dielectric (PID), a key material for advanced semiconductor packaging, and is now gearing up to actively address demand in AI and other high-performance semiconductor markets.

PID is a photosensitive dielectric material used to form ultra-fine interconnects between semiconductor chips and substrates.

By creating pathways for electrical signals and improving circuit fidelity, PID enhances device performance and reliability in advanced packaging processes.

The importance of PID continues to grow as high-performance semiconductors require denser and more precise circuitry.

LG Chem¡¯s liquid PID offers high-resolution patterning, low-temperature curing capability, and features low shrinkage and low moisture absorption properties, improving process stability.

Furthermore, it is free of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and excludes organic solvents such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and toluene, ensuring compliance with increasingly stringent environmental regulations.

Accelerating Development of Film-Type PID for Advanced IC Substrates

To compete in a market historically led by Japanese materials makers, LG Chem has leveraged its expertise in film technologies – spanning across displays, semiconductors, and automotive electronics – to complete the development of film-type PID and is now advancing joint programs with top global semiconductor companies.

With the rapid drive toward higher performance, both chips and IC substrates now require larger formats and finer features.

As substrates scale up, differences in thermal expansion and contraction increase the risks of cracking, while conventional liquid PIDs have struggled to ensure double-sided application and uniform coating on large panels.

LG Chem¡¯s film PID is supplied as an attachable film that maintains uniform thickness and pattern fidelity even on large substrates.

Its high strength and elasticity, combined with low moisture absorption, help minimize cracking under repeated thermal cycling.

Additionally, substrate manufacturers can utilize their existing lamination equipment without requiring any process changes, enabling seamless adoption.

LG Chem CEO Shin Hak-cheol stated: ¡°LG Chem is proactively addressing our customers¡¯ needs for advanced packaging innovation across a broad materials portfolio. We are committed to going beyond simple material supply to shape new industry trends with our customers.¡±

LG Chem is strengthening its position in advanced semiconductor packaging by mass-producing and developing key back-end materials, including Copper-Clad Laminate (CCL), Die Attach Flim (DAF), Non-Conductive Film (NCF), and Build-Up Film (BUF).

LG Chem to Target Global Customers at K 2025 with Innovative, Tailored Materials

LG Chem announced on Oct. 1 its participation in K 2025, the world¡¯s premier trade fair for plastics and rubber, taking place October 8–15 in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Under the theme ¡°Chemistry Driven. Impact Ready,¡± LG Chem will showcase its high-value-added, eco-friendly materials developed through its differentiated technologies. The company¡¯s presence aims to draw global attention and highlight various breakthroughs.

At its 286-square-meter booth - the largest among Korean chemical companies - LG Chem will display over 65 products, readily available for delivery and tailored to meet customer needs.

The booth will include nine dedicated meeting rooms and a business lounge for customer engagement.

It will also feature exhibition zones organized by key industries and technologies, offering a comprehensive view of how LG Chem¡¯s high-value-added, sustainable products are transforming daily life and contributing to a sustainable future.

¡°We are dedicated to delivering a differentiated experience for our customers by swiftly addressing their needs with our high-value-added products and innovative technologies that drive real business impacts,¡± said Kim Sang-min, Senior Vice President and Head of LG Chem¡¯s Petrochemical Business.

What to Expect from LG Chem¡¯s Booth at K 2025

In the Mobility Zone, LG Chem will showcase key innovations for the automotive industry, including radiator grilles and rear lamps made with high-gloss, high-heat-resistant, high-value-added synthetic resins such as ASA and ABS, which are currently supplied to global automakers.

The zone will also feature electric vehicle (EV) charging cables developed with ultra-high Molecular Weight polyvinyl chloride (PVC) for superior heat resistance and flexibility, as well as coldness resistance, flame-retardant engineering plastics that delay thermal runaways for EV battery packs.

In the Living Zone, LG Chem¡¯s superior matte-finish ABS material will take center stage. Known for its high tensile strength at elevated temperatures, this material creates a refined, understated effect on kitchen appliances like refrigerators and dishwashers - without the need for additional painting.

The Packaging Zone will highlight sustainable solutions like LG Chem¡¯s UNIQABLETM, a next-generation material combining sustainability with functionality.

Designed as a mono-polyethylene (PE)-material solution, UNIQABLETM enhances recyclability while maintaining the physical properties of existing multi-material packaging films.

Visitors can also explore packaging solutions and case studies developed in collaboration with LG Chem¡¯s global partners.

Lastly, at the High-Performance Hub, LG Chem will exhibit carbon nanotube (CNT) for secondary batteries and conductive plastics, high-performance binders to increase battery capacity and lifespan, and NexulaTM aerogel, which offers exceptional thermal insulation and high thermal resistance for ESS and secondary batteries.

LG Chem will also spotlight its mechanical and chemical recycling technologies, as well as eco-friendly raw material capabilities designed to meet European Union regulations, such as the End-of-Life Vehicles Regulation (ELVR) and other recycling/environmental regulations.

Additionally, the company will present strategic products tailored for the expanding recycled materials market.

To foster greater collaboration, LG Chem will host open seminars within its booth, creating opportunities for mutual communication with global customers.

These seminars will cover diverse customer-requested topics and provide tailored solutions to meet specific needs.

Held every three years in Düsseldorf, K trade fair is Europe¡¯s largest and most prestigious plastics trade fair. Regarded as one of the top three global plastics exhibitions, alongside the National Plastics Exposition (NPE) and Chinaplas, the 73rd triennial K trade fair is expected to attract over 3,000 companies and more than 200,000 visitors from around the world.
