The Federation of Construction Associations (FCA) has been intensifying all-round activities to prevent serious industrial disasters from construction sites and boost awareness of safety.

Such moves may be construed as an expression of construction industry circles¡¯ willingness to upgrade safety management to higher levels in accordance with the government¡¯s policies to eradicate serious industrial disasters.

In the first step, FCA Chmn. Han Seung-goo on July 30 convened a meeting of 16 city and province chairmen of the Construction Association of Korea (CAK) to take emergency steps to eradicate serious industrial disasters and secure the safety of construction sites.

FCA Chmn. Han said during the meeting, ¡°People¡¯s lives and safety take precedence over any value, and protecting workers¡¯ lives is essential for a sustainable development of the construction industry, and the industry will build an effective, field-oriented safety management regime and put it into practice.¡±

A taskforce designed to eradicate serious industrial disasters, manned by 17 organizations and research institutions under the stewardship of FCA, was inaugurated on Aug. 5.

The team conducts inspections on safety steps during regular meetings, research commissioned for analyzing causes of serious industrial disasters and pan-industry campaigns and practical safety activities, such as performances during Construction Day anniversary events.

Seventeen FCA member companies and CAK¡¯s 16 city and province associations began to hang large-sized signboards on eradiating of serious industrial disasters to convey a safety-first message internally and externally of the industry on Aug. 14.

The signboard campaign is designed to not only demonstrate the construction industry¡¯s determination toward safety, but also raise a sense of warning to not only workers but also all the people.

CAK has been offering each sphere¡¯s special safety education programs, circulating 16 cities and provinces across the nation to uproot serious industrial disasters from construction sites since Aug. 13.

On Aug. 18, FCA Chmn. Han presided over a meeting of CEOs of the nation¡¯s top 30 construction companies and FCA¡¯s city and province association heads to spread awareness toward safety at construction sites and eradicate serious industrial disasters.

The meeting reviews major problems of construction sites, which were raised during a meeting of construction company CEOs, presided over by the labor minister on Aug. 14. It also explored practical ways of ensuring safety that can be in place at construction sites in areas such as the building and operating of advanced safety systems.

FCA Chmn. Han said, ¡°We will dramatically reduce serious industrial disasters from construction sites by conducting a variety of activities, such as emergency countermeasure meetings, the operation of a taskforce team, signboard campaigns and special education programs circulating the nation, and the government, the parliament and industry circles will join forces with one mind to establish a safety culture of construction sites.¡±
