The National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, also known as Suhyup, held a fisheries sales promotion event, giving freebies and discount coupons from April 1 to April 7 on the occasion of the 63rd anniversary, which fell on April 1.
The fisheries sales promotion took place at the Suhyup Shopping market, the online domestic fishery product outlet from April 1 to April 7.
Anyone who clicked on the 63rd anniversary banner could participate in the event.
Discount coupons on live abalone and other fisheries products worth 30,000 won were given out on a daily basis in a random draw among participants.
Suhyup also gave up to 48 percent discounts to abalone, octopus, scallop and queen crab buyers until April 13.
The offline shopping outlet Suhyup Mart held a special discount event, selling abalone, squid and anchovies up to 40 percent lower than their price tags from April 4 until April 13.
Suhyup held a ceremony to celebrate the 63rd anniversary on March 31 and presented awards to people who have contributed to the development of the federation and the fisheries industry.
Suhyup¡¯s ¡°Grand Prize of the Year¡± went to Kang Shin-sook, former Suhyup Bank president, in recognition of her lead in helping Suhyup Bank lay a foundation to support the fisheries industry by posting the best-ever before-tax profit.
Choi Min-seok, head of the Geunhaeangangmang Cooperative, was presented for ranking first in net profit in the mutual savings business, despite worse financial conditions last year.
Joo Kyu-hyun, chief of the Distribution Business Division at Suhyup, was also honored with Suhyup¡¯s Grand Prize in recognition of spearheading into shared cooperation in consumption of fisheries products with companies and expanding food supplies to companies.
In his commemorative speech, Suhyup Chmn. Roh Dong-jin said, ¡°We will devote ourselves to representing fishermen, the owner of the fisheries industry, with all our heart and make fishing villages affluent.¡±
The anniversary event took place in a calm atmosphere in consideration of bushfires that broke out in several parts of the nation.
Suhyup plans to work out and implement a package of steps to provide support to fishermen and neighborhood residents who received damage from the bushfires next month.
Suhyup Chmn. Roh Calls for Expanding Fisheries Sales Markets in Korea and Abroad
Chairman Roh Dong-jin of the Korean Federation of Fisheries Industries Associations, also known as ¡°Hansuchong,¡± said on April 1, ¡°Fisheries products are produced in better conditions and a foundation need to be created in which they can be consumed in any place in Korea and abroad to become a fisheries powerhouse.¡±
Hansuchong Chmn. Roh made the remarks while delivering an opening speech at a ceremony to mark the 14th anniversary of Fisheries Industry People¡¯s Day in Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do.
He stressed the need for expanding fisheries products markets as part of strategies to develop the fisheries industry.
The event, hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) and organized by Hansuchong, Jeollabuk-do and Gochang County, took place under theme ¡°Hope from Seas, the Future from Fisheries Industry.¡±
In his opening speech, Chmn. Roh said, ¡°The growth trend of fisheries products armed with high quality and taste every year is owed to the world¡¯s attention to the prominence of fisheries products.¡±
He gave words of encouragement to fishermen, saying that efforts of fishermen who have protected seas and raised the industry despite of any hard times have reaped other fruits.
Hansuchong and Suhyup will do their utmost to provide support so that fishermen can continue to contribute to the development of the industry with a sense of pride, he said.
Among some 1,500 people on hand at the event were MOF Minister Kim Do-hyung, Hansuchong Chmn. Roh, Jeollabuk-do Gov. Kim Kwan-young and Gochang County Major Shin Deok-seop.
Participants pledged to lead efforts to make Korea a fisheries powerhouse and the fisheries industry a sustainable one.
Meanwhile, Fisheries Industry People¡¯s Day falls on April 1 as a legal anniversary day designed to raise the morale and pride of fishermen.
Fishermen¡¯s Day started on April 1, 1969, and changed to Day of Seas, Fishermen¡¯s Industry Day and the current Fishing Industry People¡¯s Day, in accordance with the enactment of the Basic Act on the Development of the Fishing Industry and Fishing Villages in June 2015.
