President Hong Jin-bae of the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP) said, ¡°We are ushering in an era of AI voyage, and as the triangular lateen sail, controlling the direction by winds, guided humans to unchartered waters in 15 Century, that of 21st Century is AI.¡±

¡°The navigation routes are CES and MWC, being held every year by the global ICT industry,¡± Hong said.

In a column he contributed to the Joongang Daily, President Hong said, in the past, telecom service providers and equipment makers dominated MWC, but things have changed this year: AI+ has been declared and messages such as ¡°converge, connect and create¡± have been delivered.

In particular, the extension of On-Device AI and Agentic AI is pursuing an ¡°AI integrated platform¡± beyond the conventional telecommunication.

Chinese participation in CES had been restricted due to the U.S.-China conflict, while Huawei and ZTE were out in force at MWC.

MWC has served as a window for major companies to enter Europe through the widening of startup programs and attracting investments.

This year, Chinese companies¡¯ presence was outstanding. Huawei and Shaomi unveiled AI Core Network Model and SU7 Ultra, respectively.

Chinese companies demonstrated their technology prowess by taking home 14 out of the Global Mobile (GLOMO) Awards 2025. Global leaders staged a fierce competition.

GSMA Open Gateway, an alliance of 64 global telecom service providers, attempted to create new services by unveiling the Network API.

Nokia showcased quality guaranteed services while Samsung and Ericson unveiled profit-making models through smart factory and 5G FWA.

Korean companies made a strong showing.

Three telecom companies showcased innovate examples, such as AI data centers and Edge AI.

Solid and HFR disclosed Open Ran and AI-based equipment.

Participating startups are predicted to export $100 million, signaling a good omen for their entry to Europe.

6G and Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) technologies are developing fast. 6G core antenna, satellite modem chip and cooperation examples in NTN have been unveiled and an era of next-generation space network connecting space and the ground is ushering in fast.

Korea has suggested its future direction at MWC 2025.

The nation will have to demonstrate the world¡¯s first ¡°Pre-6G¡± by implementing research on 6G¡¯s original technologies and commercialization on top of evolving of AI-RAN and embark on a full-fledged development of international standardization-based MTN.

Network technologies are each nation¡¯s core sovereignty technologies and strategic competition weapons in the AI era. Korea has already proved itself through the world¡¯s first commercialization of CDMA and 5G.

This has paid off: chairing the RAN session at the 3GPP 6G Workshop, taking place in Incheon. Korea is now ready for the explosion of AI.
