Korean Register (KR) has built an ¡°Ammonia Bunkering Simulation System¡± at the LNG Fueled & Bunkering Simulation Center (LSC) at KR headquarters in cooperation with Trans Gas Solution (TGS), KR said on Feb. 26.

The shipping industry has introduced eco-friendly fuels in accordance with the International Maritime Organization (IMO)¡¯s stiffening of environment regulations based on carbo neutrality goals.

LNG had been once highlighted, but as ammonia and methanol have merged as next-generation eco-friendly fuels, technology research on commercialization is in full swing.

Complying with these trends, KR opened KR LNS in 2020, and it has offered related technology services, such as LNG fuel supply and bunkering system education and danger comprehension.

In January 2024, KR also introduced a methanol simulation system as part of efforts to expand the scope of technology services in alternative fuel sectors.

The latest system was developed with objectivity and reliability based 17 kinds of ammonia fuel supply and bunkering system design maps, which were drawn by TGS and reviewed by KR.

This has allowed KR to expand technology services to the ammonia bunkering system on top of LNG and methanol, thus enabling the provision of specialized technologies, such as tailored trial operation, optimal operation and danger analysis.

KR Senior Exe. Vice President Kim Dae-heon, said, ¡°KR LSC is offering differentiated education and technology services in the alternative fuel bunkering simulation sector, and the latest introduction of the ammonia bunkering simulation system will serve as an opportunity to take preemptive steps to correspond to the growth of the related industry and rising technology demand and expand solutions tailored to meet customers¡¯ needs.¡±

TGS President Lee Jae-ik said, ¡°Introducing the ammonia bunkering simulator on top of LNG and methanol bunkering simulators, jointly developed with KR is a very meaningful, and we will provide support so that small-sized shipbuilder and equipment makers can operate low-flash point fuel oil supply stems in a safe and efficient fashion.¡±

Moving further, President Lee said, TGS will continue to make efforts to promote the nurturing of eco-friendly shipping fuel experts and the development of the engineering industry through the system.

KR Pledges to Develop Maritime Industry through Eco-Friendly and Digital Technology

Korean Register approved the 2024 settlement proposal at the 63rd General Meeting of Shareholders, at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry Building on Feb. 27.

Korean Register reported that KR logged 198 billion won in revenues in 2024, a 5.2 percent year-on-year rise and a 14.9 billion in net profit.

KR Grants World¡¯s First AIP to HD KSOE for Pioneering Large-Scale Liquid Hydrogen Tank Vacuum System

Korean Register awarded the world¡¯s first approval in principle (AIP) to HD KSOE for its breakthrough vacuum-insulated large-scale liquid hydrogen tank system, marking a significant advancement in clean energy transportation technology.

The AIP follows the successful completion of validation tests, demonstrating the system¡¯s feasibility and innovative design.

The transition to a hydrogen-based society demands advanced technologies for the large-scale transportation and storage of hydrogen.

However, the extreme cryogenic conditions required for liquid hydrogen storage at 253¡ÆC have long posed significant challenges.

HD KSOE has independently developed a vacuum-insulated liquid hydrogen tank system that addresses key challenges by introducing cutting-edge solutions.

This innovative system dramatically reduces the time required to create a vacuum in large tanks, shortening the process from several months to just a few days.

Last December, HD KSOE collaborated with leading global hydrogen industry stakeholders, including Woodside Energy, Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), and Hyundai Glovis, to conduct rigorous validation tests.

These tests marked a groundbreaking achievement as the world¡¯s first successful demonstration of the feasibility of scaling up liquid hydrogen tanks, while dramatically reducing vacuum processing time.

KR evaluated the system¡¯s compliance with domestic and international standards, confirming its effectiveness and stability and granting the AIP as a result.
