HD Hyundai Group Chairman Kwon Oh-gap demanded the shipbuilding business make the most of opportunities to cooperate with the United States to cope with the Chinese competition.

Chmn. Kwon made the remarks while delivering his New Year¡¯s message on Dec. 31.

¡°The shipbuilding business, a core part of our group, has to ponder in a new way different from the current one,¡± he said.

¡°There are some people who do not take the Chinese shipbuilding industry seriously, but it is not at all, and Chinese shipyards are making inroads into the market by leveraging their unit price competitiveness,¡± Chmn. Kwon said.

Chmn. Kwon said, ¡°We have to make the most advanced ships in which China cannot catch up by further optimizing three core areas – technology development, design and production, while at the same time, HD Hyundai will have to implement strategies to recapture the previous market, being eaten away by China.¡±

Citing issues like declining population and production technology transfer, Chmn. Kwon said ¡°Amid the situation, cooperation in the shipbuilding sector with the United States may be seen as new opportunities for us.¡±

¡°We have to find our advantage while dealing with it in a cool fashion, and we will make it by demonstrating our experiences and expertise, and our government needs to closely cooperate so that the Team Korea-shipbuilding¡¯s capabilities can be played to our optimal level,¡± he said.

Chmn. Kwon said, ¡°The heart of the matter is technology innovation, and in order to secure technology innovation, our group keeps on focusing on nurturing design, development and research manpower with a focus on global R&D center, and we will continue to recruit manpower.¡±

¡°I pray for the repose of the souls of those who were killed in the crash of an aircraft and offer words of consolation to their bereaved families,¡± Chmn. Kwon said.

He urged his executives and staff to pay heed to safety values. ¡°Safety is the most significant thing at not only the three shipyards but all production spots.¡±

In particular, he called for the Daesan plant of HD Hyundai Oil Bank, with many old facilities, to pay more attention to safety.
