The S-OIL Science and Culture Foundation (Chmn. Hong Seok-woo) held the 14th S-OIL Excellent Degree Thesis Awards and the 6th Next-Generation Scientists¡¯ Awards ceremonies at S-OIL headquarters in Mapogu, Seoul, on Dec. 5.
The Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST) and the Korean Association of Private University Presidents (KAPUP) jointly organized the ceremonies.
During the events, 12 young scientists whose theses were selected in the six areas, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, life science, chemical engineering and material engineering/IT and their 12 academic advisers were delivered 144 million won in research support funds.
Six people who were selected as next-generation scientists in the six areas — physics, chemistry, physiology, chemical engineering/material engineering, and IT and energy sectors — and their advisors were delivered a combined 240 million won in a research fund.

The winners of the excellent thesis awards are Dr. Kim Sun-woo of Seoul National University and Dr. Choi In-hyuck of KAIST in the mathematics sector; Dr. Jang Won-jin of Seoul National University and Dr. Cho Dae-geun of Pohang University of Science and Technology in physics; Dr. Kang Gyu-min of KAIST and Dr. Chung Hoe-min of KAIST in the chemistry sector; Dr. Lee Young-yoon of Seoul National University and Dr. Ha Yoo-jin of Yonsei University in the life science segment; Dr. Ryu Seung-yoon of Pohang University of Science and Technology and Dr. Baek Ji-hwan of Seoul National University in the chemical engineering/material engineering; and Dr. Won Dae-yeon of Seoul National University and Dr. Cha Sung-min of Seoul National University in the IT sector.
The winners of the next-generation scientist awards are Prof. Kim Hee-chul of Pohang University of Science and Technology in the physics sector,; Prof. Yoon Dong-gi of KAIST in chemistry; Prof. Kim Chang-gon of Yonsei University in physiology, Prof. Han Jeong-woo of Seoul National University in chemical engineering/material engineering, Prof. Jang Ji-wuk of UNIST in energy and Prof. Choi Joon-il of KAIST in IT.
S-OIL CEO Anwar A. Al-Hejazi said. ¡°As there are scientists who are recognized globally by announcing excellent theses in basic science sectors, the future of Korea¡¯s science is bright, and from now on, S-OIL will continue to support Korean scientists so that they can devote themselves to studying in a stable fashion.¡±
S-OIL Presents 17 People with ¡®Civilian Hero Awards of the Year¡¯
S-OIL held the ¡°2024 Civilian Hero Awards of the Year¡± in cooperation with the Korean National Council on Social Welfare.
Award plaques went to 17 people, who demonstrated the spirit of sacrifice to save neighbors facing dangers on top of a combined 140 million won in prize money.
The award winners were to a person who was killed for a righteous cause, one who was wounded for a righteous cause and 15 active heroes.
The late Kwak Han-gil was fatally hit by a 16-ton freight car while rescuing a driver who had his 4-ton freight vehicle overturned. He was returning home after finishing work in Cheonan on the Gyeongbu Expressway in January.
Lee Hee-sung had his ankle fractured while preventing a traffic accident by climbing and stopping a truck rolling with a loose break.
S-OIL CEO Anwar A. Al-Hejazi said, ¡°Civilians who demonstrated a spirit of sacrifice to rescue neighbors facing a danger are genuine heroes of our society, and S-OIL will strive to become a reliable and trusted company like the dead heroes.¡±
S-OIL has supported righteous people who have rescued neighbors facing danger by demonstrating a brave spirit as the company explored a combed 325 civilian heroes and awarded some 2.4 billion won over the past 17 years.
