The National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) successfully wrapped up a symposium designed to share outcomes of the utilization of medical big data.
The event took place at the International Conference Room of the Korea Press Center in Seoul on Nov. 20.
It was held under the theme ¡°Ways of Utilizing Big Data in an AI Era.¡± The regular symposium, held every year since 2016, was designed to share the outcomes of excellent research based on health care big data, and explore ways to utilize big data.
This year¡¯s symposium took place with about 110 people in attendance, including officials of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), KOSAT and related organizations, as well as medical circles and research circles related to health insurance big data research.
The symposium was chaired by Prof. Koh Sang-baek of Yonsei University.

The theme of the first session was ¡°health insurance service innovation based on bid data and AI¡± while the theme of the second session was ¡°excellent research outcomes utilizing health insurance big data.¡±
Prof. Kwon Yong-jin of Seoul National University Hospital gave a presentation on NHIS¡¯s vision on the provision of services tailored to meet subscribers¡¯ needs based on big data through AI technologies and how to ramp up the insurer¡¯s roles.
Prof. Kim Dong-wook of Gyeongsang National University shared practices on customer services and raising duty efficiency through AI technologies under the theme ¡°Improving of inside and outside insurance services using the small Large Language Model (sLLM) technology.¡±
Kim Jae-yong of the Big Data R&D Office at NHIS, the last speaker of the first session, spoke about how to analyze and use vast health insurance data, owned by NHIS, trough AI.
The speakers of the second session were Prof. Kim Young-kook of Seoul National University, Director Park Young-joon at the KDCA, and Sun Jeong-yeon, chief of a team at the Big Data R&D Office at NHIS.
Prof. Kim of Seoul National University shared outcomes of analyzing human impact of night artificial lighting.
Director Park at KDCA announced plans to evaluate the effectiveness of national tuberculosis management policies and projects and utilize them through production of foundation to establish and supplement policies by building the Korean Tuberculosis and Post-Tuberculosis Cohort (K-TB-N Cohort), the tuberculosis big data.
Sun, a team head at NHIS, touched on the need for building an effective in-hospital infection control regime to prevent tuberculosis through analyzing data on in-hospital tuberculosis big data.
NHIS Rated at ¡®Top Grade at 2024 Disaster Management Evaluation¡¯ of National Core Institutions
The National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) said on Dec. 15 NHIS got an ¡°A¡± grade at the 2024 Disaster Management Evaluation of National Core Institutions for the second year in row.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) conducts an evaluation of protection targets and their designation, dangers, danger management and disaster management, targeting 144 institutions in 11 sectors in accordance with the Basic Act on Disasters and Safety.
The Public Health Insurance Information System of NHIS has been designated as part of the national core foundation in the information and communications sector since 2013.
NHIS has been rated an ¡°A¡± grade for the second straight year in recognition of making strenuous efforts to maintain core functions of health insurance, such as provision of the health insurance services, without interruption in case of disasters.
