Toray Advanced Materials Korea (TAK) held a ceremony for the expansion of IT film units 13 and 14 and aramid fiber unit 2 at Gumi No. 5 Plant in Gumi City on Oct. 23.
Among about 200 people on hand at the ceremony were Ryu Peob-min, Director-General for Cross-Border Investment Policy at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Koichi Mizushima, Japanese ambassador to Korea, Gyeongsangbuk-do Gov. Lee Cheol-woo, and Gumi Mayor Kim Jang-ho as well as Toray Industries Chairman Akihiro Nikkaku, TAK Chairman Lee Young-kwan and TAK CEO Kim Young-seop.
The latest expansion project involves the increasing of IT film production capacity to 300 million sq. meters annually at the Gumi No. 5 Plant. It will focus on producing and supplying multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) release films.
If the expansion project is finished, TAK will see its MLCC release film supply capacity of 900 million sq. meters per year, including the existing release film production line.
The MLCC market, influenced by the high-performance of IT gadgets and the electrification of cars, is predicted to surge an average of 10 percent annually by 2030. TAK, with the world¡¯s top technology in the MLCC release film sector, plans to aggressively meet growing demand based on its high-quality and stable supply capabilities.
The latest expansion will enable Toray Industries, with the world¡¯s largest polyester film supply capacity, to solidify its status an the exclusive high-performance, most-advanced film maker, and contribute to the development of innovative next-generation products based on an integrated production system ranging from polymerization to polyester film and advanced processing.
TAK, producing meta-aramid films, is expanding a second unit with an annual production capacity of 3,000 tons at the Gumi No. 1 Plant, whose operation is slated for mid-2025.
The expansion will help TAK secure an annual supply capacity of 5,400 tons, including that of the first unit.
Meta-aramid is exceptional heat resistance and electrical insulation product.
The meta-aramid market is predicted to increase 5 percent annually through 2030.
TAK is the second company in the world to adopt a dry spinning method, allowing even quality and exceptional electrical and thermal properties, and enabling the application of high-perform heat-resistance clothes, EVs and super-voltage transformers.
The latest expansion will contribute to protecting the environment by expanding the supply of dope-deep yards sans dying process.
Toray Industries plans to spearhead into the global advanced fiber industry by using its supply chains and developing technologies on its own.
TAK CEO Kim Young-seop said, ¡°We will continue to expand future growth engines through continuous R&D and expanded investments while redoubling efforts to revitalize the national and provincial economies.¡±
Meanwhile, TAK expanded facilities to produce polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) resin, a super engineering plastic, and advanced high-strength carbon fibers last year.
The company has carried out aggressive investments and M&As by entering the secondary separator and water treatment O&M businesses.
This year, TAK announced a plan to invest 500 billion won at the Gumi National Industrial Complex in Gyeongsangbuk-do to accelerate efforts to secure new growth engines.
