Hanwha Group Chairman Kim Seung-youn¡¯s two decades of efforts to promote civilian diplomatic relations between Korea and the United States have borne fruit. Hanwha received the 1st Korea-U.S. Alliance Grand Prix from Korea-US Alliance Foundation (KUSAF) and Korea Defense Veterans Association (KDVA) for the groundbreaking initiative over that time.
KUSAF and KDVA said on Oct. 30 that Hanwha won the 1st Korea-U.S. Alliance Grand Prix. President Son Jae-il of Hanwha Aerospace and Hanwha Systems were presented with a trophy in recognition of the group¡¯s contributions to the security of the Korea-U.S. alliance.
The Korea-U.S. Alliance Grand Prix was inaugurated this year with the purpose of widely recognizing individuals and organizations who have contributed to strengthening Korea-U.S. alliance and national security.
Hanwha has offered patronage to UKSAF and KDVA since 2017, when UKSAF was inaugurated.
The business group have been conducting diverse activities to promote amicable relations between the two countries, such as revisiting by U.S. soldiers stationed in Korea and scholarships for children of U.S forces Korea soldiers.
In particular, Hanwha Chairman Kim has endeavored to promote bilateral cooperation as a civilian diplomat of the Korea-U.S. alliance.
He served as the first chairman of the Korea-America Association, established in June 2006 for expanding Korea-U.S. relations to the private sector.
He has maintained close relations with several U.S. political figures, including former president George W. Bush and ex-president Bill Clinton.
Chairman Kim has maintained ties with Chairman Edwin D. Fuller of the Heritage Foundation for 40 years.
Views in the political, diplomatic and economic sectors have been conveyed to step up Korea-U.S. alliance through diverse channels in the United States.
In 2011, the Heritage Foundation built ¡°Kim Seung-youn Conference Center,¡± named after Chairman Kim in recognition of his contribution.
In his acceptance speech at the awards ceremony, Hanwha Aerospace President Son said, ¡°As Korea-U.S. alliance is a corner stone for Korea¡¯s liberal democracy and economic prosperity, Hanwha will do not spare efforts to provide support for a solid Korea-U.S. alliance with a mission of contributing to the development of the nation as a defense industry company.¡±

Hanwha Vice Chairman Kim Meets with Leaders of U.S. Pacific Fleet to Discuss Ship MRO Projects
Vice Chairman Kim Dong-kwan of Hanwha Group met with Adm. Steve Koehler, commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, and they looked around the U.S. military support ship ¡°Willy Shira,¡± which is undergoing renovations at the Geojae shipyard of Hanwha Oceans.
They discussed additional cooperation for ship MRO projects of the Military Sealift Command in the India-Pacific region.
In July, Hanwha Oceans struck an MSRA deal on MRO projects of the U.S. navy ships and won its first MRO project on the ship Willy Shira.
