The National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) offered the 21st NHIS UHC Global Academy 2024 from Sept. 23 to Sept. 27.
The training course was designed to transfer Korea¡¯s health insurance system to the global community, targeting 80 health policy officials from 17 countries.
Health policy officials from 69 countries in Asia, South America and Africa, have participated in the training program over its 21 years, since it was inaugurated in 2004.
NHIS has made efforts to offer support for achieving universal health care of participants¡¯ countries by sharing the experiences and outcomes related to ¡°K- health insurance¡± and long-term health care systems with participants¡¯ countries through the training program.
In particular, the latest training program consisted of 12 lectures in four categories of high demand, which were selected according to the outcomes of a survey of participants.
Experts of NHIS participated in the training program as lecturers and shared working-level knowledge on the operation of health insurance systems and policies, so that health insurance policies suitable for the situation of each participant¡¯s country can be developed.
Ding Wang, technical officer with the World Health Organization (WHO) Western Pacific, one of the participants, said, ¡°I extend whole-hearted thanks to the NHIS, Korea¡¯s sole health insurance institution, who had arranged for an opportunity for policy officials from several countries to learn experiences on the operation of systems.¡±
¡°More support for international organizations will be not spared so that experiences on the successful operation of K-health insurance and long-term care insurance can be spread to not only Asia but also South American and African continents,¡± Ding said.
In his welcoming speech, NHIS President Jung Ki-suck said, ¡°As the latest international training program is made up based on NHIS¡¯ core duties, such as insurance finance, qualification/imposition/collection, insurance benefit/health management, and long-term care, I hope that it will be meaningful experiences in which participating policy officials can enable the development and application of policies of their own countries using the knowledge they obtained during the program.¡±
¡°NHIS will lead efforts to spread experiences and outcomes of the operation of systems by aggressively implementing international cooperation projects,¡± he said.

Meanwhile, NHIS operated booths for promoting SMEs¡¯ activities related to the executing of ESG management targeting foreign health policy officials participating in the international training program.
The operation of the SMEs¡¯ booths was part of a project to offer support for promoting health insurance sales abroad.
It was arranged to promote the NHIS¡¯ support for their overseas market entry and boost shared growth between participating countries of the international training program and Korean SMEs by publicizing Korean SMEs¡¯ good products and the Korean health and medical industries to the international community.
MPCCAK Passes Recommendation to Introduce Judicial Police System for NHIS
The Metropolitan Provincial Council Chairs Association of Korea (MPCCAK) approved a recommendation to introduce a judicial police system for the National Health Insurance Service at an extraordinary session of the council held at BEXCO, Busan, on Sept. 30, NHIS said.
It was significant that 17 provincial councils across the nation had joined forces for to protect people¡¯s health rights and close fiscal loopholes related to the health insurance.
