LG Uplus announced on Oct. 3 that it is implementing a smartphone drone delivery service for the first time as a carrier.

The service is aimed at customers living in island areas where fast delivery has been impossible due to lack of transportation.

LG Uplus started the smartphone drone delivery service in three areas of Jeju Province, including Gapa Island, Biyang Island and Mara Island from Oct. 2.

For the drone delivery service, the company partnered with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Jeju provincial government.

According to LG Uplus, customers purchase smartphones at the official online mall ¡°Uplus.com¡± and LG Uplus delivers them from a drone delivery base in Jeju Province to delivery points in island regions using drones.

Customers can pick up their smartphones at the delivery points.

The advantage of drones is that unlike ships, which end their operations at 4 p.m. on average, they can be delivered quickly and easily, regardless of the time of day.

By utilizing drones, delivery periods for island areas will be shortened from about seven days to two to three days.

Customers do not need to experience the hassle of visiting stores.

LG Uplus¡¯s smartphone drone delivery service is provided through the K-Drone Delivery Service operated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport and the Jeju provincial government.

K-Drone Delivery is a service in which the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport and 14 local governments selected for the Drone Demonstration City Project use drones to deliver daily necessities to islands and parks.

LG Uplus will first partner with the Jeju provincial government to provide the service based on infrastructure such as drone devices, delivery bases and control systems in place on the region.

LG Uplus plans to expand the service beyond smartphone delivery to include orders on the Jeju provincial government¡¯s public delivery app, ¡°Mukkebi.¡±

In particular, starting with Jeju Province, LG Uplus plans to expand the K-drone delivery service to 32 island areas, 17 park areas, and one port area in five local governments.

Combating Illegal Spam Messages by Using AI

LG Uplus announced on September 29 that it has activated a company-wide council to prevent phishing scam damage caused by illegal spam messages and applied the ixi Spam Filter System to remove spam messages from its mobile communication network.

LG Uplus developed the system to reduce increasingly sophisticated illegal spam messages.

The ixi Spam Filter uses artificial intelligence models that study spam report data provided by the Korea Internet and Security Agency (KISA) to block spam messages before customers receive them.

Since its inception, the ixi Spam Filter System has achieved an accuracy rate of over 95 percent in filtering illegal spam messages. With real-time monitoring, it can detect new types of spam messages.

The ixi Spam Filter System will continue to improve its capabilities by learning the latest illegal spam messages daily.

LG Uplus has decided to expand the types of malicious messages it manages to include ¡°pseudo-investment¡± spam messages about illegal stock investment information providers, illegal loans, smishing, gambling, adult materials and illegal drugs.

Since August, the company has been operating a sanction policy that blocks senders¡¯ numbers and asks the senders for explanations even if it sends just one such spam message.

LG Uplus has strengthened its management and supervision of resellers of bulk text messaging using its network.

The mobile carrier is also sharing a blacklist of illegal spam senders and their sending histories with government authorities.

As a result of these policies, the number of spam messages reported in August decreased by 10 percent compared to the monthly average in the first half of this year, an LG Uplus official said.
