Busan Port Authority (BPA) carried out ship-to-ship methanol bunkering and unloading for a methanol-driven container ship, successfully verifying the nation¡¯s first concurrent work at New Port on Sept. 8, BPA said.
It was in November 2023 that the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) established a plan to build a network to supply eco-friendly ship fuels.
Under the plan, the ministry has implemented a project to verify concurrently bunking and loading following steps to secure ships and build port infrastructure.
BPA has offered the project to verify methanol bunking by exempting port facility fees and reviewing safety procedures through a consultation body among related organizations.
The verification was conducted at the second wharf of New Busan Port for about 11 hours. During the verification, 103 Hyodong Chemi, the first project awardee, supplied about 3,000 tons of methanol to Antonia Maersk, a 16,000 TE containership at the wharf.
Busan Port Authority (BPA) carried out ship-to-ship methanol bunkering and unloading for a methanol driven container ship at New Port on Sept. 8.
In August, Busan successfully concurrently verified LNG bunkering and unloading.
In particular, shipping companies operating eco-friendly ships favor concurrent loading and ship-to-ship bunkering to save money, so the simultaneous bunking-unloading work is expected to serve as a significant yardstick to determine the competitiveness of eco-friendly ports in the years to come.
BPA President Kang Joon-suk said, ¡°It is a significant achievement that the successful verification has proved Busan Port¡¯s no problem in supplying the eco-friendly fuels, LNG and methanol, and we will redouble efforts to raise its competitiveness as a global green port leader by continuously building infrastructure and developing technologies to expand eco-friendly shipping fuel bunkering from now on.¡±
BPA Signs MOU on Cooperation in Eco-Friendly Ship Fuel with Hamburg and Ulsan Ports and UPA
Busan Port Authority struck an MOU to cooperate on eco-friendly ship fuel with Hamburg Port Authority and Ulsan Port Authority (UPA) at Busan Port International Exhibition & Convention Center (BPEX) on Sept. 24.
The tripartite deal, aiming to expand the use of eco-friendly ship fuels and standardize bunking technologies, is drawing attention as an example of cooperation among global ports for sustainable growth.
The agreement calls for promoting the use of eco-friendly ship fuels, standardizing bunkering technologies, improving carbon reduction systems and infrastructure inside ports and supporting the navigating of eco-friendly ships.
Busan Port and Hamburg Port both pondered how to cope with decarbonization and digitalization, common tasks of the port community, through several human and technology exchanges since they established a pact on sister ports in 2010.
The latest MOU is expected to serve as an important opportunity to build a reinforced partnership based on cooperation they have so far promoted.
Ulsan Port is the world¡¯s fourth biggest energy hub port capable of handling liquid cargo. The port is playing a key role in supplying fuels to ships anchoring at Busan Port.
In particular, Ulsan Port is expected to supply diverse eco-friendly ship fuels via ship-to-ship bunkering by using its rich oil storage facilities.
In November 2023, the two ports signed a contract to invigorate the eco-friendly ship fuel bunkering industry in the southeastern sphere.
BPA President Kang said, ¡°The deal will be an opportunity to spearhead into global standardization in the global eco-friendly ship fuel market in cooperation with Hamburg Port and Ulsan Port.¡±
Busan Port will make a leap forward as a green port to supply diverse eco-friendly fuels from now on, he added.
