KEPCO E&C signed an MOU with Rwanda for mutual cooperation in the technology and business areas related to small modular reactors (SMRs) and used battery energy systems (UBESS).
The event took place at the Chosun Palace Hotel in Seoul on June 4.
Among those on hand at the ceremony were officials from both sides, including President Kim Sung-Arm, and Rwanda¡¯s Minister of Infrastructure Jimmy Gasore.
Under the deal, both sides will conduct technical support and business cooperation in rolling out SMRs and stabilizing the energy supply based on UBESS in Rwanda.
At the event, KEPCO E&C shared plans to roll out small nuclear reactors in Rwanda, including education on nuclear plant design and the development of nuclear infrastructure, along with various personnel exchange activities.
Technical support and regulatory reviews for establishing UBESS were also agreed upon.
Rwandan President Paul Kagame, along with key delegates/officials, made a trip to Korea and held the Korea-Africa Summit June 4 and June 5.
Rwanda, which has undergone rapid economic growth and a surge in electricity demand, is currently facing power shortages due to inadequate infrastructure.
As a result, the African country is exploring alternatives, such as the rollout of SMRs and UBESS.
The summit followed a visit by the Rwandan ambassador to KEPCO E&C headquarters in Gimcheon last April to explore potential business cooperation, which led to the signing of the latest deal to formalize these efforts.
Minister Jimmy Gasore said, ¡°We look forward to coopering with KEPCO E&C which owns world-class technological expertise in the energy sector, to make a significant contribution in developing our energy industry, a core element of our national growth.¡±
KEPCO E&C President Kim said, ¡°SMR and UBESS technologies will be the most efficient and effective solutions to meet Rwanda¡¯s growing energy needs, and we will strive to assist Rwanda with rich human resources through diverse personnel exchange activities beyond technology cooperation.¡±
KEPCO E&C Cooperates in Developing Wind Power Projects with Unison
KEPCO E&C struck an MOU with Unison, Korea¡¯s wind power generator maker, for the development of wind power generation projects in Korea.
A signing ceremony took place at KEPCO E&C headquarters in Gimcheon on Jan. 31, with KEPCO E&C President Kim Sung-Arm and Unison President Park Won-suh in attendance.
The agreement calls for jointly exploring on-land wind power projects by sharing information on the development of wind power projects and cooperating in technologies.
The deal is expected for KEPCO E&C and Unison, Korea¡¯s wind power business leaders in Korea, to establish a foothold to expand the wind power business in Korea.
Unison specializes in producing and supplying wind power generators, with a track record of implementing projects to develop wind power complexes.
The company participated in the construction of on-land wind power farms, including Yeongdeok Wind Power and Gangwon Wind Power farms. Unison has entered the off-shore wind power business market by successfully operating a 10MW off-shore power generator without loading.
KEPCO E&C is an energy public entity committed to engineering technology innovation in the power generation business.
The company is engaged in brisk business and investment in areas, including not only nuclear power but also renewable energy sectors.
In particular, KEPCO E&C is committed to not only developing technologies on its own, but also implementing diverse projects through several expertise institutions, as the company has led the Korean wind power generation business by carrying the Hallim Wind Power Farm Project in Jeju on a turn-key basis, ranging from development permit to design, procurement and purchase.
KEPCO E&C President Kim said, ¡°Collaboration between KEPCO E&C and Unison is expected to expand the wind power generation business in Korea, and we will continue to make efforts to realize global carbon neutrality by leading technologies related to wind power, no-carbon energy source.¡±
