The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) held an event to celebrate the 2024 World Standards Day at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry building in downtown Seoul on Oct. 15.
Forty awards were handed out to individuals and organizations, who contributed to developing industries and strengthening Korea¡¯s national competitiveness through standardization.
The anniversary event, marking the 25th anniversary, served as an opportunity to reveal their determination to secure competitiveness by spearheading key international standards in advanced technologies, such as AI and quantum technology, which are already changing the paradigm of the world economy.
The ceremony was held under the theme ¡°Korea on a Journey toward a Standards Power.¡±
The Order of Industrial Service Merit, Broze Tower, went to Kim Tae-gyun, head of the Technology Innovation Division at Korea Electric Power Corp. Kim has been devoting himself to standardizing power grid network technologies for the past 27 years.
In particular, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) adopted the medium voltage direct current power grid technology, Korea¡¯s key technology, as one of its future priority standardization tasks.
He was honored with the order in recognition of establishing a foothold for Korea to spearhead the standardization of the next-generation power grid.
Kim Yoon-sun, who works at Samsung Electronics, was awarded the Industrial Merit Medal for his contribution to international standardization in the mobile telecom sector — particularly leading 5G telecom standards.
In his commemorative speech, MOTIE Minister Ahn Duk-geun said, ¡°Standards are the key of hegemony over advanced technologies to control future markets, and the government will rev up the speed of developing international standards and help the private sector lead continuous standardization efforts in order to so that Korea can secure the supper difference competitiveness of cutting-edge industries.¡±

Meanwhile, starting with the World Standards Day anniversary event, MOTIE will hold the Standards Week from Oct. 15 to Oct. 18.
The activities, to be held during the Standards Week, include the Size Korea Forum Convention, the ¡°Session of Revealing Excellent Standard Conference Data Commercialization Outcomes,¡± the ¡°Session of Announcing Excellent Results Connected with R&D and Standards,¡± the ¡°Session of Unveiling National Standards Coordinators¡¯ Outcomes,¡± and the ¡°National Poll on Ideas on Life Convenience Standards.¡±
Such events are designed to make known the significance of standards and ramp up the utilization and spread of standards.
