Gangwon State Gov. Kim Jin-tae toured Boston, the United States on Sept. 27, and supported Gangwon-based bio companies¡¯ overseas market entry, advancing the development of medical system improvement technologies in Gangwon State, and discussed ways of promoting diverse cooperation, such as global manpower development, the provincial government said on Sept. 29.
Gov. Kim visited Cambridge Innovation Center in Cambridge, the United States, held meetings with Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI) U.S. branch and tenant companies, and discussed ways concerning Gangwon-based bio companies¡¯ global market entry and the construction of a bio specialized complex in province.
The latest trip was arranged in support of Gangwon-based companies¡¯ overseas market entry and exploring how to establish and operate a bio specialized complex promotion body, as the province was designated as a bio specialized complex by the central government in June.
Currently, KHIDI U.S. branch and 30 Korean bio companies are accommodated at CIC, and EuBiologics CO, Gangwon¡¯s representative leading bio company, moved there in April.
Park Soon-man, head of KHIDI U.S. branch, said, ¡°Korean pharmaceutical and bio companies show synergetic effects with a focus on CIC and build up success stories in the overseas market, and many respected companies in Gangwon State are expected to enter the market.¡±
Gov. Kim said, ¡°While touring CIC, I¡¯ve realized how companies, research institutes and universities have established the bio industry ecosystem and spearheaded into the global market,¡± and we will not spare efforts to help Gangwon-based notable companies enter the Boston cluster.¡±
Gangwon State will successfully accomplish the establishment of a Gangwon-style bio cluster by exploring the creation, expansion and operation of a bio specialized complex through cooperation with KHIDI U.S. branch, he added.
Gov. Kim then went to Harvard Medical School where he discussed ways of developing medical technologies and strengthening the bio-health industry ecosystem and University of Massachusetts — Medical School, where he talked about ways of implementing joint cooperative projects concerning joint research on the development of advanced technologies on AI-based medical delivery systems, the development of medical technologies for patient-oriented primary medical care, and global manpower development, including exchanges among Gangwon area¡¯s university students and health care providers.
Joseph M. Petty, the mayor of Worcester, Massachusetts, participated in the meetings and expressed expectations of overall global cooperation covering governments, universities and hospitals.
The latest visit served as an opportunity for Gangwon State take a step towards the building of advanced systems using AI technologies, and exchanges of expertise manpower.
The academic community and medical care providers are expected to promote innovation in the medical service sector.
Gov. Kim said, ¡°We have begun to build a global cooperation system through meetings in Alberta, Canada, and CIC, the United States, Harvard Medical School, and University of Massachusetts - Medical School, and they are expected to contribute to the growing of the bio industry of the Gangwon area and the developing of provincial people-oriented medical care.¡±
Gangwon reconfirmed the importance of global market entry through the trip and explored ways of offering systematic support in the case of bio companies¡¯ market entry while accelerating support of diverse projects with universities and hospitals, such as the establishment of joint global research institutes.
